Chapter 9 - THE ARMY COULDN’T FIX MY MARRIAGEPeople assumed my uniform would solve things.

It didn’t.

My command helped with administrative support after I reported the domestic crisis.

I received time to stabilize housing and legal matters.

I spoke with military legal assistance about my own obligations and documents.

But the house was civilian property.

The loan was civilian.

The assault investigation was local.

My mother and brother were civilians.

There was no colonel who could snap his fingers and restore Maya’s trust.

That part belonged to me.

And I had damaged it.

The hardest conversation happened in couples counseling.

Maya sat at the opposite end of the sofa.

The counselor asked:

“What do you need Daniel to understand?”

Maya answered immediately.

“I was afraid of him too.”

I felt sick.

“I never touched you.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because your mother kept telling me you were angry.”

I looked at her.

“She said you thought I cheated. She said you were ashamed of me. She said when you came home you’d make me sign anyway.”

Maya swallowed.

“Then every time you called, you sounded colder.”

I covered my face.

I had thought emotional distance was protection.

If Maya had betrayed me, I would not beg.

That was the stupid prideful story I told myself.

Victoria used every quiet call as proof.

See? Daniel knows.

By the end, Maya believed I might come home and side with them.

That explained why she recoiled from my touch.

Not because I had hit her.

Because my mother had turned me into an approaching threat.

The counselor asked me what I wanted Maya to understand.

I said:

“That I was manipulated too.”

Then immediately wished I could take it back.

Maya’s expression closed.

The counselor let the silence sit.

Finally I said:

“No. That’s wrong.”

I looked at Maya.

“I want you to understand that I had chances to ask better questions, and I didn’t.”

That was closer.

“I believed my mother because believing her was easier than admitting something might be seriously wrong at home while I was too far away to fix it.”

Maya started crying.

I continued.

“I made your fear lonelier.”

That was the truth.

Victoria created the lie.

I chose what I did with it.

Being manipulated explained my failure.

It did not erase it.
