Chapter 1 - THE BLANKETI had imagined my homecoming hundreds of times.

Maya running toward me.
My hands around the pregnant belly I had watched grow through a phone screen from seven thousand miles away.
Maybe both of us crying.
Instead, my wife recoiled when I touched the bedroom door.
“Daniel?”
The fear in her voice stopped me.
Maya was curled on our bed in a pink satin nightgown, one arm locked around her stomach.
My mother stood in the doorway.
My brother Julian stood beside her.
“What happened?”
Maya pulled the cream blanket higher.
My mother, Victoria, answered.
“She’s exhausted. Leave her alone.”
I stepped closer.
Maya flinched.
Not from the bed.
From me.
That frightened me more than anything.
“Maya.”
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
She started crying.
My mother sighed.
“She’s been emotional for weeks.”
I reached for the blanket.
Maya grabbed it.
“Please.”
I stopped.
“What’s under there?”
Nobody answered.
Then I saw a purple mark beneath the edge of Maya’s sleeve.
My heart began pounding.
I pulled the blanket back.
Maya cried out and curled tighter around her belly.
Bruises covered her arms.
Dark marks crossed one thigh.
Another bruise spread along her hip.
Finger-shaped marks circled her wrist.
I could not understand what I was seeing.
Behind me, Victoria said calmly, “She bruises that easy.”
I turned.
“What?”
“She always has.”
Maya’s head snapped toward her.
Julian moved first.
He rushed toward the bed.
“Give me the papers.”
Maya shoved one hand beneath the pillow.
Julian grabbed for her wrist.
“Sign it and smile.”
Maya recoiled.
Then she looked directly at me.
“They did this, Daniel.”
Everything inside me stopped.
Julian still had his hand on her.
I knocked his arm away and shoved him backward from the bed.
He stumbled two steps.
“Touch her again,” I said. “Try.”
“Daniel,” my mother warned.
I stepped between them and Maya.
Nobody moved.
Then Maya slowly reached beneath the pillow.
She pulled out her phone and a folded document.
Victoria’s face changed.
Julian’s did too.
Maya handed me the paper first.
HOME EQUITY CREDIT APPLICATION.
Borrowers:
Daniel Williams.
Maya Williams.
Requested amount:
$485,000.
Our home address in Fairfax County was printed beneath it.
My name already had a signature beside it.
Maya’s did not.
I stared.
“I never signed this.”
Julian said quickly, “It’s preliminary.”
Maya unlocked her phone.
“Read the messages.”
The conversation was between Victoria and Julian.
Three nights earlier.
VICTORIA:
Daniel still thinks she’s hiding something about the baby. Keep her scared until she signs.
JULIAN:
What if she calls him?
VICTORIA:
She won’t. I have her phone at night.
Then one more.
VICTORIA:
We only need her signature. After that, the house solves everything.
I looked at my mother.
She looked less frightened than angry.
“You don’t understand what’s at stake.”
May you like
Behind me, Maya whispered:
“They made sure you wouldn’t.”
