Chapter 8 - Daniel Reported His Own Negligence
Daniel’s attorney warned him before the formal bank report.
“If you allege unauthorized use of the security card, the bank will ask how your mother obtained authority, why you didn’t review statements directly, and why multiple transfers were approved through credentials connected to you.”
Daniel knew.
“Do it.”
“You may not recover everything.”
“I know.”
“Some transactions may legally appear authorized because you gave your mother broad powers.”
“I know.”
“And your employer may review reimbursement submissions carrying your employee certification.”
Daniel looked at the stack of false Prudence invoices.
“I know.”
That was the cost.
He filed the report.
He also notified his employer that household reimbursements submitted under his name might contain fabricated services.
The company suspended his final completion bonus pending an internal review.
Gertrude called his action “financial suicide.”
Prudence called it betrayal.
Sarah called it late.
Daniel accepted all three descriptions and kept going.
He also removed Gertrude’s and Prudence’s access to the mansion.
That could not happen instantly.
They had been living there long enough that the attorney insisted on proper written notice rather than simply changing locks and inviting another legal mess.
The assault against Sarah complicated matters, however. Sarah sought a protection order covering unwanted physical contact and harassment. The court granted temporary restrictions after reviewing the kitchen incident and Sarah’s documentation, requiring Gertrude and Prudence to remain away from Sarah’s temporary residence and communicate only through counsel regarding the house.
They moved to a hotel.
Gertrude told relatives Daniel had made his own mother homeless.
Three cousins called him.
An aunt sent a five-paragraph email about gratitude.
Daniel answered none of them.
Then he did something he had avoided for five years.
He reviewed every video call saved in his cloud account.
Sarah always sat in the same two rooms.
The formal living room.
The upstairs reading nook.
Never the kitchen.
Never the service corridor.
Never the guest wing after Prudence moved in.
Jamie almost always ate snacks during calls.
Daniel had interpreted that as childish restlessness.
Now he noticed how quickly Jamie finished whatever food appeared.
In one Christmas video, Prudence walked behind Sarah wearing the gold bracelet.
Daniel paused the screen.
Sarah saw it too.
Her expression changed for less than a second.
Then she smiled when Daniel asked about work.
The clue had been visible.
He simply lacked the framework—or willingness—to understand it.
That was the point at which Daniel stopped saying, “How could I have known?”
