Chapter 14 - The Last Thing Prudence Returned

Prudence requested one private meeting with Sarah.

Sarah refused private.

They met with attorneys present in a conference room overlooking downtown White Plains.

Prudence placed a velvet jewelry case on the table.

Inside were Sarah’s diamond studs and vintage watch.

The rest was gone.

“I couldn’t get the sapphire ring back.”

Sarah did not touch the box.

“You sold it.”

“Yes.”

“For your company.”

“Yes.”

“And the bracelet?”

Prudence looked down at her wrist.

She had already returned it through counsel.

“I kept that one.”

“Why?”

Prudence took longer than Sarah expected.

“Because Daniel gave you everything.”

Sarah almost laughed.

“He gave me a bracelet and then left for five years.”

“You know what I mean.”

“No. Tell me.”

Prudence’s composure cracked.

“When we were kids, Mom counted every dollar. Daniel got out. He became the successful one. Then he married you, and suddenly there was this version of family where everybody was supposed to be happy because Daniel could pay.”

“So you stole from me.”

“I told myself it was family money.”

“Why mine?”

“Because you had the place I thought I deserved.”

Sarah studied her.

Not just greed.

Resentment.

Prudence had watched her brother build a life and interpreted his wife as the person standing between his success and the family that came first.

Sarah pushed the jewelry box back.

“Keep it until the settlement is signed.”

Prudence looked surprised.

“I don’t want another gift from this family that comes with a story about what I owe.”

The financial settlement required Prudence to repay a substantial portion of funds diverted into her company over several years. She could not pay immediately.

She agreed to sell her equity stake to her business partner and make structured repayments.

The company survived without her.

That consequence hurt more than a dramatic collapse would have.

Prudence had built something real.

She lost control of it because she refused to distinguish help from entitlement.

Before leaving, she looked at Sarah.

“Is Daniel staying with you?”

Sarah’s eyes hardened.

“That is not part of your settlement.”

May you like

Prudence nodded.

For once, she accepted that another woman’s marriage was not family property.
