Chapter 6 - NO ONE LEFT TO BLAME

Candice returned Sunday evening with Denise and Marla.

Gabriel was waiting in the living room. Lucas sat beside Rebecca near the front window. Wyatt stood by the fireplace with his aunt, his backpack at his feet.

Candice stopped when she saw both boys.

“Why is he here?” Marla demanded.

Wyatt looked at the floor but did not move.

Gabriel placed copies of the binder pages on the coffee table.

Denise backed toward the door.

Candice remained standing. “I can explain the money.”

“Explain Lucas first,” Gabriel said.

Candice glanced at him. “I never meant for him to get hurt.”

Lucas’s mouth tightened.

“You took my phone,” he said. “You told Dad I was lying before I even got to talk to him.”

“I was scared.”

“So was I.”

Marla pointed at Wyatt. “He’s the one who hit him.”

Wyatt flinched but raised his eyes. “You told me to.”

“I told you to make him stop snooping.”

“By hurting him?” Rebecca asked.

Marla’s answer never came.

Candice sat on the edge of a chair. She admitted learning about the stolen cards. She had believed she could repay the widows before anyone noticed. She had feared Denise would go to jail, Marla would lose housing, and Wyatt would be placed with relatives who barely knew him.

“And what were you afraid would happen to Lucas?” Gabriel asked.

Candice pressed her lips together.

That absence was the clearest answer she gave.

Gabriel acknowledged his own failure. He had handed Candice authority because he wanted peace without doing the work required to know whether peace existed. He had dismissed Lucas’s complaints because believing his wife was easier than changing his life.

“But I didn’t make you do this,” he said. “My absence gave you room. It didn’t give you permission.”

He told them the bank had the transaction records, adult protective services had contacted three of the women, and the cleaning service’s church sponsor had scheduled an emergency review for Tuesday.

Marla grabbed her purse.

Candice stopped her.

“No,” she said quietly. “We’re done leaving before somebody asks questions.”

Denise stared at her daughter. “You can’t put this on us.”

Candice looked toward Lucas, then at the evidence covering the table.

For the first time, she had nowhere to move the blame without stepping over someone she claimed to love.

On Tuesday morning, she walked into the church office to give her statement.
