Chapter 5 - THE PRICE OF KEEPING HER FAMILY
Wyatt reached Columbus that afternoon and was released to a temporary kinship placement with his father’s sister while child-welfare workers investigated Marla’s home.
He brought a backpack containing printed statements, two old phones, and a composition notebook.
The notebook provided the major piece Gabriel had been missing.
Candice had learned about the theft eleven months earlier when Helen Barrett called to ask why her electric bill had not been paid. Instead of reporting Denise and Marla, Candice began replacing stolen money in small amounts.
At first, she used her cleaning income.
Then she used Gabriel’s household account.
When that was not enough, she pawned family belongings.
The Miami trip had been Denise’s idea: one last expensive weekend before Helen’s daughter reviewed her finances. Candice had objected in a text, then agreed after Marla threatened to tell Gabriel that Candice had covered the fraud for almost a year.
Lucas had found one of those messages.
That was why the mistreatment had intensified.
Candice was not trying to punish an ungrateful stepson. She was trying to make a credible witness look unstable before Gabriel came home.
The clues now aligned: the intercepted school calls, the missing phone, the rule that Lucas could not use household appliances, the humiliation at meals, the birthday taken from him and given to Wyatt. Each act reduced his standing inside the family until anything he said could be dismissed as jealousy.
Gabriel drove alone to the house and stood in the kitchen Candice had redesigned after their wedding.
He remembered every time she had said Lucas was “acting out.” Every time he had told his son not to make him choose sides. Every mile he had put between himself and the discomfort of deciding who was telling the truth.
Candice called from Miami.
“Why did Wyatt fly home?”
Gabriel looked at the locked nightstand drawer.
“You should come back,” he said.
“What happened?”
“I found Clara’s cup.”
Candice did not answer.
Behind her, Gabriel heard Denise ask whether he had opened the drawer.
Candice’s breathing changed.
“Gabriel, don’t do anything until I explain.”
He almost told her about the reports, the copied records, and the medical photographs.
Instead, he said, “Come explain it in person.”
After the call, he uploaded the evidence to the fraud investigator assigned by Helen Barrett’s bank and provided copies to the county adult-protective-services office.
Then he made the choice that would cost him his marriage even if Candice somehow avoided criminal charges.
