Chapter 9 - THE SECRET REACHED THE FAMILY BUSINESS

Kesler Capital became involved because Helen had used company resources.

Her executive assistant.

Mail.

Family-office payments.

An investigator she had once asked to locate Paige after Paige moved apartments.

None of that automatically meant criminal conduct.

It did mean the board had questions.

Daniel recused himself.

Helen did not appreciate the gesture.

“You’re siding with strangers against your mother.”

“They’re directors.”

“Your father built that company.”

“And you used it to intercept my personal mail.”

Helen denied that characterization.

The retired assistant did not.

An internal review began.

No police arrived.

No dramatic arrest.

Just lawyers asking careful questions.

Those questions frightened Helen more than shouting ever had.

Meanwhile Paige’s chemotherapy became harder.

Daniel took Nora twice a week.

Sometimes I joined them.

The first time felt impossible.

Nora sat in the back seat beside Grace.

Grace offered her crackers.

Nora accepted.

Nothing exploded.

Children are often better at complexity than adults.

One afternoon Nora asked me, “Are you mad I’m Daniel’s kid?”

I almost cried.

“No.”

“Grandma Helen said you might be.”

There it was again.

Helen had been preparing Nora too.

For rejection.

For rivalry.

For the possibility that I would become the villain in a story Helen had written before I arrived.

“What did you tell Grandma?” I asked carefully.

Nora picked at her burgundy ribbon.

“That I wanted to meet Grace.”

I looked at her.

“You knew about Grace?”

“Since she was a baby.”

Of course.

Helen had shown Nora photographs.

Talked about birthdays.

Told her Daniel had “another family.”

Nora had grown up knowing we existed.

We had grown up, married, had a child, and lived ten miles from Helen without knowing Nora existed.

The imbalance was deliberate.

Then Nora said:

“Grandma said someday Daddy would have to choose.”

My stomach tightened.

“Choose what?”

“Which family.”

The same word Grace had used.

Pick.

Helen had been preparing both little girls for a competition she created.

That night I called Daniel.

“We keep asking who Nora’s mother is and why Helen hid her.”

“What else should we ask?”

May you like

I looked at Grace sleeping beside me.

“Why was your mother so desperate to make you believe there could only be one family?”
