Chapter 1 - THE CHILD UNDER THE TABLE

I came home from Chicago and found my three-year-old daughter eating bread off the floor.

Grace was crouched beneath my mother-in-law’s dining table in dirty cream pajamas, one knee tucked against her chest.

Above her sat enough food for ten people.

Roast chicken.

Potatoes.

Warm rolls.

And Helen was patiently cutting tiny pieces of chicken for another little girl.

“Why is my daughter under the table?”

Grace’s head snapped toward me.

“Mommy.”

I dropped my suitcase.

Helen barely looked up.

The other child sat beside her wearing a deep-burgundy ribbon in her brown hair.

I reached Grace first.

She smelled like sweat and old milk.

When I lifted her, she clutched a hard piece of bread she'd picked up from beneath a chair.

Then Daniel came running in.

“Lena, wait.”

He grabbed my forearm.

I yanked free.

Grace tried to bite the stale crust.

I looked at the untouched dinner above us.

“You let our daughter go hungry?”

Helen continued feeding the other girl.

“She refused what I served.”

“She’s three.”

“She needs to learn.”

Grace buried her face against my shoulder.

Then she whispered something that cut straight through me.

“Grandma says she gets dinner because she’s Daddy’s first girl.”

I looked at Daniel.

His face went white.

Not today.

Not one bad evening.

This had happened before.

I slowly turned toward the child at the table.

She was maybe five.

Same dark auburn undertone in her hair as Daniel.

Same gray-green eyes.

Then I noticed her wrist.

A tiny gold bracelet.

Grace wore an identical one.

Helen reached quickly to cover it.

Too late.

I looked at my husband.

Daniel stared at the floor.

“Who is she?”

Helen answered first.

“That’s enough.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“Who is that child?”

Daniel finally looked at me.

His voice cracked.

“I had to protect my other daughter.”

The girl flinched.

I stopped breathing.

“Your what?”

Daniel looked toward her.

May you like

“My daughter.”

And Helen’s hand immediately tightened around the child’s bracelet.
