I sat across from her at the kitchen table.

“You were overseas.”

“No.”

“I made it easy for her,” I said. “Every time you called, I treated home like an interruption. Every time she explained your behavior, I listened to her first.”

“Then what do you need?”

“To know you won’t become distant again the moment life feels stable.”

“I won’t.”

“You can’t promise never to fail.”

She touched the table between us.

“Promise you’ll let me name it when you do.”

“I promise.”

The unrecorded amendment gave Claire grounds to challenge the trust. She chose not to claim the shares for herself.

Instead, she asked the court to transfer them into the employee restitution fund.

Margaret’s attorney called the decision reckless.
