Chapter 10 - THE BUILDING BESIDE THE LAKE

We did not follow the instructions.

Claire called Detective Maria Alvarez, the financial-crimes investigator who had handled Margaret’s earlier case. Maria arranged surveillance around our home and sent officers to Cedar Ridge.

The property appeared empty when they arrived.

Every vehicle was gone.

Inside the main building, officers found twenty furnished bedrooms, medical equipment and unopened boxes of prescription supplies. None of it appeared in state licensing records.

The rear wing contained a locked office.

Claire’s brass key opened it.

The walls were covered with photographs of former Hale Medical Equipment employees. Each picture was attached to an injury report, settlement agreement or resignation letter.

Dozens of workers had been hurt by defective warehouse machinery during my father’s leadership.

Most signed confidential settlements.

Some received nothing.

One photograph showed a man named Thomas Reed sitting in a wheelchair. His report said a loading platform collapsed beneath him seventeen years earlier.

The official investigation blamed employee error.

A handwritten note beside the report said:

Platform inspection falsified by H.M. Payment authorized through Cedar Ridge.

H.M.

My father, Henry Hale.

Claire opened a filing cabinet.

Inside were private ledgers showing that my father secretly paid injured employees through Cedar Ridge while publicly denying responsibility.

“He knew the company was at fault,” I said.

“He helped them privately so he wouldn’t have to admit it publicly.”

It was the same lesson Margaret had taught our family.

Protect the name.

Repair only what could remain hidden.

A sound came from the hallway.

Maria drew her weapon and ordered everyone to remain still.

The side door slammed.

Officers found Ethan near the trees behind the building.

His beard was overgrown, and blood stained one sleeve of his coat.

“I didn’t send the photograph of Oliver,” he said before anyone questioned him.

Maria handcuffed him.

“Where is Margaret?”

Ethan looked toward Claire.

“She told me the insurance money would protect us after Nathan destroyed the company.”

“You helped fake her death,” I said.

“I signed what she gave me.”

“You took twelve million dollars.”

“It’s gone.”

Claire stepped closer.

“Where?”

Ethan began laughing.

Not because anything was funny.

Because he was terrified.

“Mom transferred it to Cedar Ridge,” he said. “She said she was paying back every person Dad buried.”

Maria asked again, “Where is she?”

Ethan pointed toward the lake.

“She went to meet the first employee who ever threatened to expose him.”

A single gunshot echoed from the opposite shore.
