CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 2

The Carter living room had always looked perfect from the street.

White columns. Tall windows. Trimmed hedges. A brass family nameplate beside the front door that Patricia polished every Sunday like it was a religious object.

Inside, every wall carried portraits of successful men.

Richard in his judge’s robe from years ago.

Ryan shaking hands with the mayor.

Ryan’s grandfather standing beside the first Carter Realty office downtown.

Emily had spent three years moving through that house quietly, learning the rules without anyone needing to write them down.

Do not embarrass Ryan.

Do not contradict Patricia.

Do not ask why Richard’s word ended every conversation.

And above all, do not let anyone outside the house know what happened inside it.

The first time Ryan grabbed her arm hard enough to leave marks, Patricia had sighed and said, “Marriage is not for delicate women.”

The second time, Richard told Emily that accusations destroyed families faster than mistakes did.

By the third time, Emily stopped telling them anything.

She smiled at charity dinners.

She wore long sleeves.

She learned how to lower her voice before Ryan raised his.

But that night, she had made one mistake.

She came home early.

Ryan had told her he was working late.

Instead, Emily found another woman leaving their bedroom, carrying her heels in one hand and Ryan’s watch on her wrist.

The woman looked more embarrassed than Ryan did.

Ryan only said, “You weren’t supposed to be back until tomorrow.”

May you like

That sentence broke something colder than her heart.

It broke the last piece of the lie she had been protecting.
