"His mother watched him corner his bruised wife and said, “Teach her where she belongs,” because in that house, exposing his affair was treated like a worse crime than what he did to her."
CHAPTER 1
Emily Carter did not scream when Ryan raised his hand.
That was what made the room go quiet.
She stood backed against the sofa in her torn gray cardigan, one hand pressed to her ribs, her eyes shining but steady. Broken glass glittered on the carpet between her bare feet and the polished shoes of the people who called themselves her family.
Ryan stood in front of her, breathing hard, his face twisted with shame he kept trying to turn into anger.
Behind him, his mother Patricia watched from beside the fireplace.
She did not look frightened.
She looked satisfied.
“Don’t hold back, Ryan,” Patricia said, pointing at Emily like she was something dirty on the floor. “A wife who humiliates her husband deserves to learn her place.”
Emily’s lips trembled.
Then she whispered, “He brought another woman into our bed.”
Ryan froze.
Only for half a second.
But everyone saw it.
His father Richard stepped forward, cold as marble under the warm lamp light.
“Then you should’ve kept your mouth shut,” he said, “and protected this family.”
Patricia laughed softly.
“Look at her crying,” she said. “She still thinks being right means anything in this house.”
Emily looked at all three of them.
Her husband.
His mother.
His father.

And something inside her finally stopped begging to be loved by people who only understood control.
“So this is who you all are,” she said.
