Chapter 3 - The Story They Had Written About Her

Claire’s guest room became Emily’s bedroom that night.
Noah slept in a borrowed bassinet beside the bed.
Emily barely slept at all.
At 2:40 a.m., she opened the legal folder.
The first pages were not filed court documents.
They were drafts.
A proposed petition concerning temporary custody and parenting restrictions.
An attorney’s name appeared on several pages, along with handwritten notes that looked like Ryan’s.
Claire sat beside Emily wearing old sweatpants and reading glasses.
“This was never filed,” she said.
“Not yet.”
The date on the earliest draft was eight weeks before Noah’s due date.
The notes described Emily as increasingly volatile.
Dependent.
Unpredictable.
Possibly unsafe after childbirth.
Emily kept reading.
One incident involved a Christmas dinner where she had supposedly “screamed and broken household items.”
Emily remembered the dinner perfectly.
Diane had announced, without asking, that she planned to stay with them for the first month after Noah arrived.
Emily said no.
Diane repeated the demand.
Ryan told Emily not to embarrass his mother.
Emily had carried two plates into the kitchen too quickly.
One slipped and broke.
That was the “destructive episode.”
Another note described Emily leaving a family gathering “without warning.”
She had left because she was vomiting from morning sickness.
Another described her refusing food.
She had gestational reflux.
Claire lowered the page.
“They turned your pregnancy into evidence.”
Emily’s eyes burned.
At the bottom of a timeline was a line that made her hands go numb.
Need independent witnesses if escalation occurs after birth.
Claire saw it too.
“Emily.”
She stood and walked away from the bed.
Noah stirred.
Immediately Emily went to him.
She placed one hand on his chest until his breathing settled.
Not today.
Not this week.
For months.
They had been waiting.
Her phone buzzed.
Ryan.
This time, she answered.
“Where are you?”
“Claire's.”
“Bring Noah home.”
“No.”
“Emily, you can't just take my son.”
“Your mother dropped him.”
“She didn't drop him.”
Emily went completely still.
Claire heard it from across the room.
“What did you just say?”
Ryan exhaled.
“She set him down too fast. You panicked.”
“I watched her let go.”
“You slapped a sixty-three-year-old woman.”
After everything, that was the sentence he chose.
Emily looked at the draft petition in front of her.
“Ryan, when did you hire a family lawyer?”
Silence.
His next breath was audible.
“Claire had no right to take that file.”
Emily felt the last piece click into place.

He hadn't asked what file.
He already knew exactly which one she meant.
