Chapter 14 - The Choice Ryan Had Avoided His Whole Life

The settlement conference took place almost ten months after Noah was born.

Emily and Ryan had lived separately for most of his life.

Their house was under contract.

Carter BuildWorks had repaid twenty-six thousand dollars to the marital account and agreed to a structured repayment of the remainder through the property settlement.

Ryan had given up the illusion that one explanation would restore his marriage.

Diane had completed several counseling sessions, quit after arguing with the therapist, then started again with someone else.

Emily remained unmoved.

Progress was not access.

Ryan requested alternating overnights once Noah reached an appropriate stage.

Emily’s attorney believed the request was reasonable if the transition happened gradually.

Emily agreed.

Then came Diane.

Ryan wanted the settlement to say only that neither parent would expose Noah to unsafe people.

Emily wanted Diane named.

Ryan resisted.

For three hours.

Finally Monica asked him why.

Ryan stared at the draft.

“If I sign this, my mother will know I chose Emily over her.”

Emily felt anger flash.

“This is still about choosing women?”

Ryan looked at her.

Then down.

“No.”

He crossed out his objection.

“It shouldn't be.”

He signed.

The provision did not erase Diane from Noah’s life permanently.

It required Emily’s written agreement before Diane could have unsupervised contact while Noah was very young.

It gave Emily protection without pretending a settlement could predict the next eighteen years.

Afterward, Diane was waiting outside.

Ryan had told her not to come.

She came anyway.

“Did you sign it?”

Ryan stopped.

“Yes.”

Diane’s face tightened.

“You let her put my name in a legal agreement?”

“Yes.”

“After everything I did for you?”

Ryan stood there for a long moment.

Emily watched from several yards away.

This was the decision Ryan had avoided since childhood.

Not choosing Emily.

Choosing himself.

“I asked you to help me hide what I did,” he said. “You made it worse. I let you. That's on both of us.”

Diane stared at him.

“So she's your family now?”

Ryan looked exhausted.

“She always was.”

Then he walked past his mother.

He did not ask Emily whether she had seen.

For the first time, he did not turn accountability into a performance for her approval.
