Chapter 6 - The Marriage Beneath the Crisis

Emily had considered leaving Owen during the seventh month of pregnancy.

Not because he hit her.

Not because he cheated.

Because she felt herself disappearing inside their marriage.

Owen handled money.

Travel.

Household staff.

Insurance.

Appointments.

Reservations.

Even disagreements.

Especially disagreements.

“He always had a better reason,” Emily told Sarah.

“If I wanted to spend Christmas with Mom, his family had already planned something.”

“If I wanted to keep working after Noah came, childcare was supposedly too complicated.”

“If I said I felt controlled, he said he was reducing stress.”

Sarah listened without interrupting.

She also forced herself to remember that Emily was still recovering.

Not every marital grievance automatically became abuse.

But patterns mattered.

“What happened when you said you might leave?”

Emily looked toward the hospital window.

“He cried.”

That surprised Sarah.

“He said his parents’ divorce ruined his childhood. He said he would change.”

“Did he?”

“For a while.”

Then Noah arrived.

Fear returned.

Emily’s fear of failing as a mother.

Owen’s fear of losing his family.

Instead of helping each other, they became trapped in different versions of control.

Emily begged for sleep.

Owen obsessed over schedules.

Emily asked for Sarah.

Owen decided Sarah made things worse.

Emily said she wanted medical help.

Owen insisted they should give it another day.

Then another.

The hospital social worker, Marisol Vega, met with Emily alone.

Sarah was not present.

Neither was Owen.

That mattered.

Emily later told Sarah the questions were practical.

Did she feel safe returning home?

Did Owen restrict her movement?

Could she access money?

Was she afraid of him?

Did she believe he intentionally wanted her to become ill?

Emily answered carefully.

“No.”

She did not think Owen wanted the rooftop.

She did not think he wanted her psychosis.

She believed he loved her.

And Noah.

That did not erase what he had done.

By the end of the week, Emily told her treatment team she did not want to return directly to the penthouse.

She wanted to stay with Sarah after discharge.

Owen reacted badly.

He called it manipulation.

Then abandonment.

Then evidence that Sarah had “gotten into her head.”

Emily listened to him on the phone.

Her face remained calm until he said, “You’re not taking Noah out of our home.”

She closed her eyes.

“Owen.”

“We can discuss supervised time until your doctors clear you.”

Sarah looked at Emily.

Emily whispered, “You already decided?”

“I’m protecting him.”

“From me?”

A pause.

“From uncertainty.”

Emily ended the call.

She sat completely still.

Then said, “He was planning this before the rooftop.”

Sarah wanted to say yes.

She stopped herself.

“We don’t know that yet.”

Emily looked at her notebook.

“No.”

She drew a line beneath the timeline.

“But I think we can find out.”
