Chapter 5 - The Sentence Ethan Had Learned by Heart
Denise interviewed Ethan twice.
His account stayed consistent.
That mattered more than dramatic language.
He did not claim Gary hit him.
He did not invent injuries.
He described yelling.
Objects thrown near him.
Furniture kicked aside.
Threats of losing meals until messes were cleaned.
And repeated incidents he said he had not caused.
Then Denise asked:
“What does your mom do when you say you didn’t do something?”
Ethan answered:
“She tells me to just take the blame because Gary calms down faster.”
Brooke was not in the room when he said it.
Denise repeated the substance later.
Brooke sat in Mark’s living room and stared at the carpet.
Mark swore under his breath.
Denise continued carefully.
“Ethan also says your mother sometimes tells him what he should apologize for before Gary comes home.”
Brooke looked up.
“What does that mean?”
“We’re still determining that.”
Mark asked, “Did Linda admit any of it?”
“She says Ethan is misunderstanding efforts to de-escalate conflict.”
Brooke laughed bitterly.
“That sounds exactly like her.”
Denise did not agree or disagree.
Brooke began searching her own memory.
One evening in January, Linda had told Ethan:
When Gary comes in, just tell him you broke the garage remote.
Brooke had assumed Ethan actually broke it.
Another time:
Apologize for the stain before he sees it.
Brooke remembered thinking her mother was helping Ethan avoid a blowup.
Now a different possibility emerged.
What if Linda already knew who had caused those things?
Mark stood near the window.
“There’s something I need to tell you.”
Brooke looked at him.
“Your mom asked me for money in December.”
“How much?”
“Five thousand.”
“Why?”
“She said the mortgage got behind after her hours were cut.”
Brooke frowned.
Linda worked as an office manager for a dental practice.
She had mentioned reduced hours.
But Gary moved in partly because he could help with expenses.
“Did you give it to her?”
“Two thousand.”
“Did she pay you back?”
“No.”
That alone proved nothing.
But it shifted the picture.
Gary was controlling.
Linda was financially afraid.
And instead of confronting either problem directly, she kept redirecting tension toward Ethan.
Brooke’s phone buzzed from an unknown number.
A photograph arrived.
Gary’s hand holding a broken pair of expensive work headphones.
Under it:
ASK YOUR BROTHER IF HE REMEMBERS THESE.
Brooke recognized them.
Gary had accused Ethan of breaking them in February.
Ethan had cried.
Linda told everyone he had stepped on them.
Brooke stared at the photograph.
The headphones had one distinctive strip of silver tape.
She had seen them somewhere else after February.
Not in the house.
In Linda’s car.
Brooke stood.
“Mark.”
“What?”
“I think Mom had these after Ethan supposedly broke them.”
Mark came closer.
“Where?”
“In her trunk.”
Brooke’s pulse accelerated.

It was the first clue suggesting Linda had not merely pressured Ethan to accept accidental blame.
She may have been manufacturing the blame herself.
