Chapter 11 - The Truth Didn't Send Brooke Home

Gary moved out permanently.
That did not mean Brooke and Ethan immediately returned.
Linda expected they would.
She ended the relationship.
Changed the locks.
Started individual counseling.
Told the caseworker she understood.
Then asked:
“When can my kids come home?”
Denise answered carefully.
“When they feel safe and the plan supports it.”
Linda looked offended.
“I removed Gary.”
Brooke understood the problem immediately.
Her mother still saw Gary as the danger she needed to remove.
Not herself.
Brooke said:
“You were part of it.”
“I admitted that.”
“Admitting isn’t the same as understanding.”
Linda looked wounded.
Brooke nearly apologized.
She stopped.
That reflex was still alive.
Mark was confronting his own mistakes too.
He had suspected things were wrong.
He disliked Gary from the beginning.
But he allowed Linda to keep him at a distance because family conflict exhausted him.
“I figured if something serious happened, you’d call.”
Brooke looked at him.
“I did.”
“I know.”
“No. I mean before.”
She reminded him of Thanksgiving.
Brooke had joked that Gary treated Ethan “like a recruit at boot camp.”
Mark had laughed.
He remembered.
His face fell.
“You were telling me.”
“I didn’t know I was.”
Mark nodded.
“That doesn’t mean I couldn’t have asked another question.”
Adults had missed warnings because the warnings arrived wrapped in ordinary language.
Strict.
Difficult.
Disrespectful.
Stressful.
Family stuff.
Brooke had missed them too.
She had physically stepped between Gary and Ethan more than once.
That made her feel brave.
It also allowed her to believe she had handled the problem.
She had not.
The next time Ethan met Linda, he brought his list of false apologies.
He placed it on the table.
“Do you remember these?”
Linda looked at the words.
“Yes.”
“All of them?”
Her face tightened.
“Yes.”
“Why me?”
Linda started crying.
Ethan immediately looked at Brooke.
Brooke could see him preparing to comfort their mother.
Linda saw it too.
She wiped her face.
“No.”
Ethan froze.
Linda took a breath.
“You don’t need to make me feel better.”
It was the first thing she said that sounded different.
Ethan looked uncertain.
Linda continued.
“I picked you because Gary believed me when I said you caused trouble.”
Brooke watched Ethan absorb it.
“And because you were easier to scare than Brooke.”
Linda’s voice broke.
“That was cruel.”
Ethan looked down.
“Yeah.”
Linda nodded.
“Yes.”
No excuse followed.

Brooke did not forgive her.
But she noticed.
