Chapter 8 - The Man In The Suit Starts Begging

Ethan asked to see me at 9:40 that night.

Detective Vega said I could refuse.

Liam said nothing, but his face answered for him.

Mom said, “Absolutely not.”

I surprised all of them.

“I want the door open,” I said. “Police inside. Liam beside me.”

Ethan was brought to the doorway, not into the room.

His suit was still neat, but the man inside it had started to unravel. His tie was loose. His hair was no longer perfect. A red mark crossed his wrist where his watch had pressed too tight.

He looked first at Liam.

Then at the officers.

Then at me.

“Claire,” he said softly. “This has gotten out of hand.”

I almost smiled.

Out of hand.

That was what he called felony assault, financial fraud, and years of terror when witnesses were present.

Detective Vega stood near the wall, arms folded.

Ethan lowered his voice into the old shape of intimacy.

“You’re hurt. You’re scared. Your brother is filling your head with things.”

Liam shifted beside my bed.

I touched his wrist once.

Not yet.

Ethan saw the movement and hated it.

“I love you,” he said.

The words landed in the room and died there.

“No,” I whispered. “You love ownership.”

His face tightened.

“Claire, listen to me. Apex is complicated. If outsiders get involved, people lose jobs. Families suffer. Is that what you want?”

There he was.

Not apologizing.

Negotiating.

I looked at the man who had once kissed my forehead under chandeliers while donors clapped for his generosity.

“You asked for the password while I was bleeding on the kitchen floor.”

His mask cracked.

Only for a second.

“You were going to ruin me.”

Detective Vega’s eyes sharpened.

Liam went completely still.

Ethan realized what he had said.

I stared at him.

There was the confession. Not enough for everything, maybe. But enough to show the truth beneath the lie.

“You ruined yourself,” I said.

He stepped forward.

Both officers moved.

Liam rose so fast the chair hit the wall behind him.

Ethan froze.

For a second, the hallway filled with the old danger.

Then he looked around and saw something he had never faced at home.

Witnesses.

People who believed me.

A locked unit.

A brother between us.

His voice dropped to a whisper.

“You’ll regret this.”

May you like

Liam stepped closer, his voice colder than the hospital lights.

“No,” he said. “You will.”
