Chapter 2 - The Brother Ethan Made Disappear

Ethan didn’t know Liam was working that day.
That was the first crack in his performance.
For two years, Ethan had made sure I stayed away from my brother. Missed calls. Deleted texts. Family dinners canceled at the last minute because Ethan suddenly “needed” me at a donor event or claimed I was too tired to go.
At first, Liam blamed my marriage.
Then he blamed himself.
Then he stopped pretending.
Six months earlier, he had shown up at my house unannounced after I missed Mom’s birthday dinner. Ethan was at a meeting, and I opened the door wearing long sleeves in June.
Liam looked at my wrist.
He didn’t ask the polite question.
He said, “Who did that?”
I tried to pull my sleeve down. “It’s nothing.”
He stepped inside. “Claire.”
Hearing my name in his voice nearly broke me.
Liam had raised me after our father died. Not legally. Not officially. But in all the ways that mattered. He learned to braid my hair badly before my fifth-grade recital. He picked me up from prom when my date got drunk. He sat in the front row when I got my forensic accounting certification and cried like he had paid tuition himself.
I had always been his little sister.
Until Ethan convinced me that protecting Liam meant keeping him away.
That day, in my kitchen, Liam saw the bruise and understood more than I wanted him to.
“You need to leave,” he said.
“I need proof.”
“You don’t need proof to survive.”
“I need proof no one can explain away.”
He grabbed the edge of the counter, fighting not to yell. “You might not live long enough to collect it.”
But I was already collecting.
Financial records. Threatening texts. Photographs. Medical notes from urgent care visits Ethan thought I had paid cash for and buried.
Every file was encrypted and sent to one person.
Liam.
Now, in the emergency department, he stood over my gurney, seeing what his warning had become.
Ethan extended his hand like this was a networking event.
“Dr. Carter,” he said. “I’m Ethan. Claire’s husband.”
Liam did not shake it.
He leaned over me instead, his gloved hand careful near my shoulder.
“Claire, can you hear me?”
I blinked once.
His jaw tightened.
Ethan laughed softly, uneasy now. “She’s pretty out of it. Like I said, she fell.”
Liam slowly turned.
May you like
His eyes landed on Ethan with a coldness I had never seen before.
“She didn’t fall.”
