Chapter 9 - Where Your Secrets Go On Trial

The emotional climax came when Judge Whitaker asked me if I wanted to speak.
Daniel turned to me. “You don’t have to.”
“I know.”
My legs felt unsteady as I walked to the center of the courtroom. Every step pulled memory with it. Jason’s hand on my wrist. Madison’s smile over champagne. Doctors who looked away. Friends who believed the easier version.
I stood beneath the seal of the court and faced the judge.
Then I faced Jason.
“You told everyone I was fragile,” I said. “You said I forgot things. You said I embarrassed you. You said I was jealous, unstable, dramatic, paranoid.”
Jason stared at the table.
“Look at me.”
His jaw tightened, but he did.
I touched one scar near my shoulder, not to display it, but to claim it.
“These are not proof that I was weak. They are proof that I survived long enough to stand here.”
The gallery was silent.
Madison was crying now, but I didn’t look at her.
“I helped build that company. I loved you. I trusted you with my father’s legacy because I believed marriage meant we were on the same side.”
My voice shook.
I let it.
“You used my trust as a bank account. You used my body as a warning. You used another woman as a weapon. And when you thought you had taken everything, you walked into this room smiling.”
Jason’s eyes lifted.
Anger burned through his fear.
“You’re enjoying this,” he said.
“No,” I answered. “I am ending it.”
Judge Whitaker leaned back slowly.
Daniel’s hand rested on the table, ready if I needed him.
I didn’t.
I turned toward the court.
“I am requesting immediate protection orders, emergency control of all trust and company assets, referral for criminal investigation, and sanctions for every fraudulent document submitted under my name.”
Caldwell closed his eyes.
He knew.
Everyone knew.
Judge Whitaker looked at Jason with open disgust.
“Mr. Mitchell,” he said, “based on what this court has seen and heard today, I am granting temporary exclusive control of Mitchell Medical Technologies and all protected trust assets to Mrs. Mitchell pending full investigation.”
Jason stood. “You can’t do that.”
The judge struck the gavel.
“I just did.”
A deputy stepped closer to Jason.

The courtroom exhaled all at once.
And I finally sat down.
