Chapter 7 - The Recording From The Stairwell

The twist came from Madison’s phone.

Not because she turned brave.

Because she turned scared.

During the recess, she had tried to leave the courthouse through the side stairwell. Detective Laura Gaines from the county attorney’s office stopped her near the exit with a subpoena and a warning that destroying evidence would be a separate charge.

Madison cried.

Then she gave them her phone.

People like Madison always believed loyalty lasted only until consequences arrived.

The courtroom watched as Detective Gaines took the stand and confirmed the chain of custody. Then Daniel asked permission to play an audio file recovered from Madison’s deleted folder.

Jason went completely still.

Madison whispered, “No.”

Judge Whitaker allowed it.

The speaker crackled.

At first, there was only the echo of a staircase.

Then Madison’s voice.

“She’s not signing fast enough.”

Jason’s voice answered, low and irritated. “Then we make her look incompetent.”

Madison laughed nervously. “You already did that.”

Jason said, “Not enough for court. I need a breakdown people can witness.”

A chill moved through the room.

On the recording, Madison lowered her voice.

“What about the gala?”

Jason replied, “Too public. I need something private first. Something that makes her afraid to show her body. She’ll hide. She always hides.”

My hands went numb.

Daniel looked at me, and for one second, his professional mask slipped.

He hadn’t heard this part either.

The recording continued.

Madison asked, “And if she fights?”

Jason’s answer came without hesitation.

“She won’t. Iris doesn’t fight anymore.”

The courtroom was silent.

The twist wasn’t that Jason had hurt me.

The twist was that the humiliation had been part of the plan.

The scars he mocked me for hiding were never just the result of his rage. They were strategy. He wanted me covered. Isolated. Ashamed. Invisible. He wanted the world to see my silence as weakness and my fear as instability.

Madison’s voice returned, smaller now.

“You promised me the company after the divorce.”

Jason laughed.

“I promised you a lot of things.”

Madison turned toward him as if he had struck her.

Jason didn’t look at her.

He was looking at me.

For the first time, I understood something clearly.

He had not loved Madison more.

May you like

He had simply found another woman willing to help him erase me.

And now he was losing both of us.
