Chapter 12 - THE THINGS THEY CALLED LOVE

The confrontation took place in a conference room at the restructuring firm.

Grant sat beside two attorneys. Vanessa sat across from him with hers. Arthur attended only because the independent investigators requested testimony about his contract decisions.

Claire arrived last.

Grant looked at her bruises, now fading beneath her cheekbone.

“You’ve made your point,” he said.

Claire removed her coat. “You still think this is about winning an argument.”

Arthur described the first time Grant asked for help. Grant had come to his office after midnight, admitting the company could not make payroll.

“You said Claire would blame herself if the business failed,” Arthur told him.

“She would have.”

“No,” Claire said. “You needed him to believe that.”

Grant’s mouth tightened.

Vanessa admitted she created inflated invoices and moved money into the acquisition entity. She said Grant determined the amounts and instructed her to use Vance contract revenue because Arthur would never allow the company to fail.

Grant turned toward her.

“You begged me to help your father.”

“I begged you for a loan. You gave me a crime.”

“You cashed every check.”

Vanessa looked away.

Claire asked Grant why he had placed the acquisition shares in a trust under her name.

“Because Crestline trusted you,” he said.

“Did you?”

Grant laughed bitterly. “You never trusted me. You spent eleven years waiting for your father to prove I was small.”

Claire felt the old instinct to defend herself.

Instead, she let the accusation stand long enough to examine it.

“I did compare you to him,” she said. “And when I saw things that scared me, I hid them because I didn’t want him to be right.”

Grant leaned forward.

“There. You wanted the life too.”

“I wanted the marriage. You used that to take the life away from me one choice at a time.”

Arthur stared at the table.

He admitted that his private bailouts were not generosity. They were control disguised as rescue. He feared Claire would retreat from him if Grant failed and blamed him.

“I kept buying myself a place in your life,” he said.

Grant protected status.

Vanessa protected her father’s house.

Arthur protected access to his daughter.

Claire had protected the story that her marriage was her own decision and therefore had to succeed.

When the meeting ended, the investigators had motives but still needed an independent link between Grant and the detailed fraud.

As Grant stood, Vanessa said, “Tell them where the home server is.”

He stopped.

Claire watched his face before he answered.

The server had not been taken to protect household privacy.

It contained the instructions none of them had yet recovered.
