Chapter 1 - SIX TIMES

The sixth slap knocked Claire Whitmore into the marble console beside the front door.

Her hip struck the edge. A silver picture frame toppled, hit the floor, and split across the photograph from her tenth wedding anniversary.

Grant stood over her, breathing through his nose.

“Shut up,” he said. “You’ve embarrassed me enough.”

Claire touched the corner of her mouth and saw blood on her fingertip.

Behind him, Vanessa Cole leaned against the staircase in Claire’s blue silk robe. Claire’s mother’s pearl earrings hung from Vanessa’s ears.

Claire had found them at the dining table twenty minutes earlier, sharing wine from her mother’s crystal glasses. Grant had not apologized. He had demanded that Claire leave them alone.

When Claire told Vanessa to remove the pearls, Grant struck her.

Claire counted every blow because counting was easier than accepting that her husband’s hand kept returning.

Grant picked up the overnight bag Claire had packed after discovering the affair and threw it through the open door. It landed on the rain-darkened porch.

“This house was never yours,” he said. “Get out.”

Vanessa smiled. “Look at you. Crying in the doorway like trash nobody wants.”

Claire pushed herself upright. Grant seized her arm and shoved her across the threshold. She stumbled barefoot onto the wet stone.

The door slammed behind her.

Within seconds, the security gate opened remotely, forcing her off the property and onto the sidewalk of their quiet Highland Park street.

Rain soaked her cream dress. A passing SUV slowed, then continued.

Claire sat beneath a streetlight and called her father.

Arthur Vance answered on the second ring.

“Claire?”

“He hit me.”

Arthur’s voice lost all warmth. “Are you safe?”

“No.”

“Send your location. Don’t go back inside, don’t answer Grant, and don’t delete anything he sends you. Security and a doctor are coming.”

Claire stared at the mansion where Grant had spent years insisting he had built everything without help from the Vance family.

“Dad,” she said.

“I’m here.”

“Show him no mercy.”

Arthur was quiet for several seconds.

Then he said, “Tomorrow morning, his company receives an audit notice. I was hoping I’d never have to tell you why.”
