Chapter 8 - GRAHAM STEPPED ASIDE
The Holloway company board had five members.
Charles.
Graham.
Judith.
Peter Holloway.
And an independent director named Susan Bell who had worked with the company for twenty years.
Because questions now surrounded Judith’s authority to act for Charles and Graham’s knowledge of the earlier dispute, Susan recommended an independent review.
Graham agreed.
Then he did something Nora did not expect.
He stepped aside temporarily as president.
Not because anyone forced him that morning.
Because he finally understood that remaining in control while his own decisions were being reviewed would make every result suspect.
The company appointed its longtime operations vice president as interim manager.
Graham hated it.
He called Nora afterward.
“I spent twelve years building that business with Dad.”
“I know.”
“I might not get it back.”
“I know.”
“Can you say something other than I know?”
Nora was quiet.
Then:
“You’re finally paying a price you didn’t choose for someone else.”
He absorbed that.
“Yeah.”
Nora’s irreversible decision came the same week.
After speaking with her attorney, the hospital advocate, and Charles’s counsel, she filed for a civil protection order restricting Judith from contacting or approaching her while the assault case was reviewed.
It felt enormous.
Judith had been at every Thanksgiving of Nora’s marriage.
Every Christmas morning.
Every anniversary dinner Graham’s parents insisted on hosting.
The order would turn future family events into logistical problems.
Nora signed anyway.
Judith reacted with fury.
She told Graham Nora was forcing him to choose.
Graham answered through counsel:
She should not have had to ask.
The family home became quiet.
Charles remained in assisted living by choice while his doctors and attorney evaluated what living arrangement he wanted next.
Judith stayed alone in the Indian Hill house.
Then her attorney sent Samuel a demand.
Judith claimed Charles lacked sufficient capacity to revoke or modify any financial authority and accused Nora and Graham of manipulating him.
The accusation placed Charles’s voice at risk.
If he could not demonstrate what he understood, Judith could continue arguing that everyone else was using his confusion.
Samuel arranged a formal capacity evaluation with specialists who had no connection to the family.
The process would not be quick.
While they waited, Nora received a call from Meredith.
“I remembered something from your dinner.”
“What?”
“Before Judith pushed you, Graham said, ‘Mom, not again.’”
Nora sat completely still.
