Chapter 12 - JUDITH FINALLY SAID WHY SHE GRABBED CHARLES

The confrontation with Judith happened at Samuel Greene’s office.
Not the family home.
Not a dinner.
No staircases.
Judith attended with her attorney.
Charles came with a mobility aide and his own counsel.
Graham sat beside Nora but not touching her.
For the first time, Judith looked physically smaller than everyone remembered.
She did not behave smaller.
“This entire thing is grotesque,” she said. “I kept that company alive.”
Charles answered:
“At what point did keeping it alive become permission to run my life?”
“You were sick.”
“I was still there.”
“You couldn’t remember conversations.”
“I remembered enough to know I wanted Sam.”
Judith’s jaw tightened.
Nora asked:
“Why did you grab him?”
Judith’s attorney began to object.
Charles raised one hand.
“I want her answer.”
Judith looked at Nora with naked dislike.
“You had no right to come into this family and turn every weakness into evidence.”
Nora almost smiled.
“That wasn’t an answer.”
Graham whispered:
“Mom.”
Judith snapped toward him.
“You don’t get to judge me. You signed everything.”
“I know.”
The agreement in his voice disrupted her more than denial would have.
Judith looked toward Charles.
Finally she said:
“You were leaving.”
Charles waited.
“You were going to your brother’s house, then to Sam. The bank deadline was Monday. You were prepared to let the company collapse because you were angry with me.”
“I was prepared to read what I was signing.”
“You always thought there would be more time.”
Her voice cracked.
“I knew there wasn’t.”
That was what Judith had been protecting.
Not just money.
Control over catastrophe.
For decades Charles had been the visionary. Judith handled practical crises quietly behind him.
When illness weakened him, she convinced herself decisiveness was the same thing as authority.
“What happened at the stairs?” Charles asked.
Judith stared down.
“I grabbed you.”
“And?”
“You pulled away.”
“And?”
Her eyes filled.
“I grabbed you again.”
Silence.
“Did you push me?”
Judith’s mouth trembled.
“I don’t know.”
Charles gave a tired laugh.
“You always know.”
Judith closed her eyes.
“I wanted to stop you from leaving.”
There it was.
Not an admission that she intended a fall.
An admission that she used physical force to stop another adult from leaving.
Nora asked:
“And me?”
Judith looked directly at her.
“You were taking Graham away too.”
Graham said:
“No.”
His mother’s face hardened.
“I was losing everything.”
Graham answered quietly.
May you like
“So you started deciding which people you were allowed to hold onto by force.”
For once, Judith had no reply.
