Chapter 9 - The House Without Her

The divorce moved quickly after that.

Camille fought at first. She wanted money, sympathy, and access to the house long enough to rewrite the story.

She got none of it.

Nathan’s attorney had the text messages. The therapist’s notes. Evelyn’s statement. Rachel’s statement. The country club incident. And the sealed silver dog bowl no one wanted to look at but everyone understood.

Camille eventually accepted a settlement that required her to stay away from Lily.

When Nathan signed the final papers, he expected relief.

Instead, he felt grief.

Not for Camille.

For the version of himself who had needed her to be good so badly that he ignored the signs she wasn’t.

That grief was harder to explain.

One night, after Lily fell asleep, Nathan sat alone in the kitchen with the lights dimmed low.

The marble floor was spotless.

The cabinet doors were polished.

The room looked the same.

But he was not sure he could ever see it the same way again.

Evelyn found him there.

“You’re allowed to forgive yourself,” she said.

Nathan looked at the floor. “Not yet.”

“Then start smaller.”

“How?”

“Believe Lily faster next time.”

His eyes burned.

“I will.”

“No,” Evelyn said gently. “Say it like a promise.”

Nathan swallowed.

“I will believe her faster next time.”

From the hallway came a soft voice.

“Daddy?”

Lily stood there in pajamas, holding her stuffed rabbit.

Nathan immediately opened his arms.

She climbed into his lap, still half asleep.

“Can we have pancakes tomorrow?” she asked.

He kissed her hair.

“Every Saturday you want them.”

She thought about that.

“Can Grandma have some too?”

Evelyn smiled.

“I would be honored.”

Lily leaned against Nathan’s chest and yawned.

The house was quiet again.

May you like

But this time, quiet did not feel like fear.

It felt like healing learning how to breathe.
