Chapter 8 - The Party Camille Didn’t Expect

Three weeks later, Camille made her final mistake.

She showed up at a small family birthday party for Nathan’s nephew at a country club outside Dallas.

Uninvited.

Wearing white.

Smiling like nothing had happened.

Nathan saw her from across the patio while Lily was decorating cupcakes with her cousins. His entire body went still.

Evelyn noticed first.

“Oh, absolutely not,” she said.

Camille walked toward them with a gift bag in one hand and tears prepared in her eyes.

“Nathan,” she said softly, loud enough for nearby relatives to hear. “Please. I don’t want this ugliness between us.”

Lily looked up from the cupcake table.

Her smile vanished.

Nathan moved immediately, stepping between Lily and Camille before his daughter had to move at all.

“You need to leave,” he said.

Camille’s face crumpled theatrically. “You won’t even let me say goodbye to her?”

“No.”

Several relatives turned.

Camille glanced around, sensing an audience, and raised her voice just slightly.

“I loved that little girl like my own. I made one mistake trying to discipline her, and now he’s destroying my life.”

Nathan felt Lily’s small hand slip into his.

He looked down.

She was shaking.

That was when his sister, Rachel, stepped forward.

Rachel had been quiet for weeks, trying not to interfere in what she called “marriage business.”

But now she looked at Camille with open disgust.

“One mistake?” Rachel said. “You made a child eat from a dog bowl.”

The patio went silent.

Camille’s face drained.

Nathan had not told everyone.

But Evelyn had told Rachel.

And Rachel, unlike Nathan, had no interest in protecting Camille’s reputation.

Camille whispered, “That’s not what happened.”

Lily’s grip tightened.

Then, in a tiny voice, she said, “It is.”

No one moved.

Nathan looked down at his daughter, stunned by her courage.

Lily did not say anything else.

She didn’t need to.

Camille’s tears disappeared.

Her mask fell apart so fast it was almost frightening.

“You people have no idea what she’s like,” she snapped.

Evelyn stepped beside Nathan.

“She’s six.”

The sentence landed harder than shouting ever could.

Camille looked around and finally understood that the room had turned.

Not because Nathan had ruined her.

Because Lily had told the truth.

Security escorted Camille from the property quietly.

No scene.

May you like

No drama.

Just a woman in white walking away from a party where nobody believed her anymore.
