Chapter 6 - The Call Michael Heard

Michael answered on the fourth ring.

“Buddy? Everything okay?”

Noah covered his mouth with one hand and whispered from the hallway, “Dad, come home.”

Michael’s voice changed immediately. “What happened?”

Noah looked toward the kitchen.

Laura’s voice cut through the house. “Clean it up. Now.”

Michael went silent.

Noah whispered, “She’s making Grandma pick dog food off the floor.”

“What?”

“She took Grandma’s money. I saw it. It’s in the kitchen drawer. There’s a phone too.”

“Noah, listen to me carefully,” Michael said. “Where are you?”

“Hallway.”

“Is Grandma hurt?”

“No. But she’s scared.”

“Stay where Laura can see you. Don’t argue. Don’t yell. Put the phone in your pocket. I’m calling Uncle Ben and Mrs. Harris next door. I’m coming now.”

Noah’s hand shook. “Dad, she says Grandma forgets things.”

“I know,” Michael said, and his voice cracked. “I’m sorry I didn’t know sooner.”

Noah ended the call and slipped the phone into his pocket just as Laura shouted again.

He walked back into the kitchen.

Eleanor was bent near the floor, one hand braced carefully on the tile, trying to gather the kibble. Her breathing looked shallow, but she was safe.

Laura pointed down at her. “All of it.”

Noah stepped in.

“Why are you making Grandma do that?”

Laura froze as if struck by light.

Eleanor’s head lifted. “Noah, sweetheart—”

He crossed the kitchen and gently held Eleanor’s arm.

“Stand up,” he said.

Laura stared at him. “Go to your room.”

“No.”

The word was small.

But in that kitchen, it sounded impossible.

Laura’s eyes narrowed. “Excuse me?”

Noah swallowed. “I know about the drawer.”

All the anger drained from Laura’s face.

Panic replaced it so quickly Eleanor saw it too.

“What drawer?” Laura asked.

Noah pointed.

“That one.”

Lightning flashed through the glass door.

For a moment, Laura looked like she might lunge toward the drawer.

Then Eleanor, still holding Noah’s hand, spoke with a steadiness Laura had not heard from her in months.

“Open it.”

Laura’s lips parted.

Noah looked at her, trembling but clear.

“Open it, or I’ll tell Dad when he gets here.”

Laura whispered, “Your father won’t believe you.”

May you like

From Noah’s pocket, Michael’s voice suddenly came through the phone, still connected through an emergency callback.

“I already do.”
