Chapter 4 - Noah Heard Everything

Noah heard the drawer before he saw it.

It was late Thursday night. Rain tapped against his bedroom window, and the hallway light cut a thin yellow line under his door.

He had woken because of thunder.

Then he heard Laura downstairs.

Not yelling.

Whispering.

That made him more afraid.

Noah crept out of bed and stood at the top of the stairs with his dinosaur tucked under his arm.

The kitchen light was on.

Laura was talking on the phone.

“No, he doesn’t know,” she said. “Michael thinks she’s losing track of things.”

Noah held his breath.

Laura laughed quietly.

“It’s not stealing if it was going to be wasted on her anyway.”

Noah didn’t understand everything.

But he understood Grandma.

And he understood the way Laura said her.

Like Eleanor was not a person.

Slowly, Noah moved down three steps.

From there, he could see Laura standing near the wooden dining table, one hip against the counter, the kitchen drawer open beside her.

Inside were stacks of cash.

More cash than Noah had ever seen in real life.

Laura picked up a silver phone from the drawer and checked something on the screen.

“No,” she said into her own phone. “I deleted the messages from Michael’s phone before he saw them. She keeps trying to tell him I’m asking for money.”

Noah’s stomach twisted.

Grandma had told the truth.

Laura had been taking things.

Laura had been making Grandma look confused.

Then Max barked from the laundry room.

Laura snapped her head toward the stairs.

Noah ran.

He reached his bedroom and climbed into bed with his shoes still on. His heart was beating so hard he thought Laura might hear it through the walls.

The next morning at breakfast, he watched Eleanor move slowly into the kitchen.

Laura placed a plate in front of her without looking at her.

“Careful,” Laura said loudly. “We don’t want you dropping anything again.”

Eleanor’s hand tightened around her fork.

Noah looked at the drawer.

It was closed now.

Normal.

Clean.

Like secrets always looked from the outside.

He wanted to tell Michael.

But Michael was away.

He wanted to tell Grandma.

But Grandma already looked like she was carrying too much.

So Noah did what scared children do when adults make the house unsafe.

He stayed quiet.

And the secret grew teeth.
