Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN VICTORIA ERASED

Lily’s music box remained with hospital security until Ben could document ownership.

Before handing it over, he agreed to let Dr. Mason photograph the picture inside.

Three people stood on a dock beside a lake.

Jonathan was younger.

Maybe thirty-five.

Beside him was a dark-haired woman Mason did not recognize.

Between them stood Erin Carter.

Lily’s mother.

On the back, written in blue ink:

Claire—

Mom was right.

I should have believed you.

Come home.

J.

Ben read it twice.

“I've never seen that.”

“Who is Claire?”

Ben shook his head.

But the Reed name made the answer easy to find through information already available to the care team.

Claire Reed Donnelly.

Jonathan’s younger sister.

Former vice president of the Reed Family Foundation.

She had resigned four years earlier after an internal financial dispute.

She had not visited Jonathan once since the accident.

Because, according to Victoria, Jonathan had explicitly forbidden it.

Mason could not simply call an estranged relative and disclose protected medical information.

But hospital administration could review whether the visitation restriction remained appropriate now that Jonathan’s capacity was being reassessed.

The hospital’s legal department contacted Claire through proper channels.

She arrived two days later.

Forty-five.

Dark hair streaked with gray.

No entourage.

No dramatic entrance.

Just a woman standing outside her brother’s room unable to make herself walk through the door.

Victoria appeared before she did.

“What is she doing here?”

Claire turned.

“You still speak for him?”

Victoria's jaw tightened.

“You walked away.”

“You made sure I thought he wanted me gone.”

“He did.”

Claire removed a folded copy of the photograph from her purse.

“Then why did he write this?”

Victoria stared at the handwriting.

For once, she had no immediate answer.

Claire entered.

Jonathan’s eyes were open.

She stopped several feet from the bed.

“Hey, Johnny.”

Nothing happened.

Claire swallowed.

“I know you hated when I called you that.”

Jonathan blinked.

Claire laughed through tears.

Then she held up the photograph.

His eyes fixed on it.

His finger moved.

Claire covered her mouth.

Victoria stepped toward the bed.

Jonathan’s monitor quickened slightly.

Mason noticed.

So did Claire.

“Why was Erin carrying this?” Mason asked.

Claire wiped her face.

“Because Jonathan gave it to her.”

Victoria turned sharply.

Claire continued.

“He was trying to find me before the crash.”

Mason looked at her.

“Why?”

Claire’s expression changed.

May you like

“Because he had finally figured out I didn't steal from him.”

Victoria walked out before Claire finished the sentence.
