Chapter 15 - THE PHOTOGRAPH INSIDE THE BOX

A year after Jonathan left the hospital, Claire drove him to Burlington.
He had asked.
She had almost refused.
Their relationship was better.
That did not mean it was repaired.
Some mornings they laughed like the siblings they had once been.
Other days one careless sentence reopened four years of damage.
Jonathan was learning that apologies did not create deadlines for forgiveness.
Claire was learning she could love her brother without pretending he had been only Victoria’s victim.
They stopped at a small lakeside park their mother used to visit.
Lily’s family joined them later.
Ben had become friendly with Claire, mostly because neither enjoyed being treated like a supporting character in someone else’s wealthy family story.
Lily carried the burgundy music box.
Jonathan sat on a bench while she wound it.
The melody started.
His right index finger moved lightly against his knee.
Lily noticed.
“You still do that.”
Jonathan smiled.
“Better than first time.”
She opened the hidden compartment.
The photograph remained inside.
Jonathan.
Claire.
Erin.
A younger version of the family before suspicion separated everyone.
Lily handed it to Claire.
Claire looked at her brother.
“You really were sending this to me?”
Jonathan nodded.
“I was coming.”
Claire studied the handwritten message on the back.
Mom was right.
I should have believed you.
Come home.
J.
For years, those words would have been enough.
Now they were not.
Claire sat beside him.
“You know I can't go back to how it was.”
“I know.”
“I don't know if I’ll ever trust you the same way.”
Jonathan looked across the lake.
“I know.”
Claire waited.
He did not ask her to forgive him.
Did not mention the accident.
Did not use Victoria as an excuse.
That mattered.
Lily closed the music box and handed it back to Jonathan.
He shook his head.
“Still yours.”
She tucked it against her cream cardigan.
When everyone stood to leave, Claire remained beside the bench.
Jonathan took several slow steps toward the path.
Then stopped.
He looked back at his sister.
He did not ask whether she was coming.
Claire looked down at the old photograph one last time.
May you like
Then toward the brother waiting several yards away.
For the first time in years, nobody else was deciding what their relationship had to become.
