For eleven months.
Different houses.
Shared parenting structured around Chloe’s therapy and recovery.
No using her as messenger.
No surprise appearances.
No arguing during exchanges.
Mark entered individual therapy.
I did too.
He apologized often at first.
Too often.
Every apology contained explanations.
The merger.
His father.
Employees.
Fear.
Corporate obligations.
Eventually I told him:
“If the apology ends with a reason, I hear the reason louder.”
He stopped.
Months later, we attended one joint session.
Not reconciliation therapy.
Co-parenting.
Mark said:
“I knew Chloe was probably alive.”
The therapist waited.
“I chose to finish the release anyway.”
No explanation.
I looked at him.
He continued.
“I let Sarah believe our daughter was dead for almost an hour because I believed I could fix the family part afterward.”
That was the first apology I believed.
Not because it repaired anything.
Because he stopped trying to improve the sentence.
He also told Chloe an age-appropriate truth when her therapist agreed she was ready.
Daddy made bad decisions after the accident.
Daddy cared too much about work when he should have come to you and Mommy first.
Chloe asked:
“Were you trying to save your company?”
Mark looked at me.
I did not rescue him.
“Yes.”
“More than me?”
His face broke.
“No.”
Chloe frowned.
“Then why?”
Mark swallowed.
“Because sometimes people can love someone most and still make a choice that doesn’t show it.”
Chloe thought about that.
Then went back to coloring.
Children could be brutally efficient.
She did not absolve him.
She also did not collapse.
The conversation adults had spent months fearing became twelve minutes and a purple crayon.
Afterward Mark cried in the hallway.
I stood beside him.
Not touching.
Then he asked:
“Do you think there’s any chance for us?”
I answered honestly.
“I don’t know.”
