Chapter 1 - THE BRACELET CHLOE NEVER OWNEDMark was already forcing a pen into my hand when the elevator doors opened.

“Sign it.”
His fingers closed around my wrist.
The settlement packet shook between us.
I could barely focus on the number printed across the first page.
$200,000.
My lip was split from the crash.
My ribs hurt every time I breathed.
And somewhere below us, in the hospital morgue, they were telling me my seven-year-old daughter was dead.
“I’m not signing anything.”
Mark’s expression hardened.
“Sarah, don’t make this worse.”
“Worse?”
His mother stepped forward.
Evelyn Bennett looked immaculate.
Champagne suit.
Pearls.
Perfect hair.
As though she had arrived for a board luncheon instead of the worst night of my life.
“You’re threatening everything Mark has spent fifteen years building.”
I stared at her.
“My daughter is downstairs.”
“Our granddaughter,” Evelyn corrected coldly.
Then she slapped me.
Once.
Fast.
Hard enough to reopen my lip.
“Stop destroying my son’s future.”
I knocked the papers from Mark’s hand.
“I’m seeing Chloe myself.”
The elevator doors opened at the basement.
Claire Donnelly, the hospital’s decedent-care nurse, was waiting.
She did not show me a body.
Thank God.
Instead she held a sealed personal-effects bag recovered with the child brought in from the crash.
Inside was Chloe’s yellow duck raincoat.
I knew every stain on that coat.
The torn pocket.
The tiny blue marker line near the sleeve.
Mark pointed at it immediately.
“That proves it.”
My knees almost gave out.
Then the bag shifted.
Something red slid against the plastic.
A bracelet.
Small red glass beads.
A silver moon charm.
My breath stopped.
I took the bag.
Looked again.
Then looked at Mark.
“That isn’t Chloe’s.”
His face changed.
“What?”
“Chloe never owned this bracelet.”
Claire stepped closer.
“Are you certain?”
“Yes.”
I knew whose bracelet it was.
Ruby Hayes.
Chloe’s best friend.
She wore it every day because her older sister had made it for her.
And suddenly a memory from the crash came back.
Rain pounding against the SUV windows.
Ruby shivering.
Chloe pulling off her yellow coat.
“Here. You can wear mine.”
I grabbed Claire’s arm.
“There were two girls in that car.”
Claire’s expression sharpened.
“I know.”
Mark went completely still.
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
Claire slowly reached for another sealed file.
“There was another pediatric patient transported from the scene.”
Mark stepped between us.
“Sarah, enough.”
I looked at my husband.
For the first time since I woke up in the emergency room, grief gave way to something else.

Suspicion.
“Where is my daughter?”
