Chapter 12 - WHAT BRANDON WAS REALLY AFRAID ELENA WOULD SEE

The face-to-face confrontation happened in divorce mediation.

Months after the slap.

Margaret was not there.

That mattered.

Elena needed this conversation to belong to her marriage.

Brandon looked exhausted.

No confident blue shirt.

No beautiful foyer.

No smirk.

Just a man sitting beside his attorney.

Elena asked:

“Why did you hit my mother?”

His lawyer shifted.

Brandon answered anyway.

“She told me she was calling you.”

“That doesn’t answer the question.”

“She had the Dalton email.”

“What Dalton email?”

“The cancellation.”

Elena understood.

Margaret had discovered not only the transfers.

She had discovered the project that was supposed to repay them had failed.

Brandon continued.

“I knew if she called you then, I couldn’t fix it first.”

“So you hit her.”

“I wanted the papers.”

“You slapped her twice.”

His eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“Why accuse her of stealing?”

He looked down.

“Because she was in my office.”

“That’s not all.”

“No.”

Elena waited.

Brandon finally said:

“I hated owing her.”

The words came quietly.

“More than the money?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because every room she walked into reminded me that our first house happened because she helped.”

Elena stared.

“A lot of people get help from parents.”

“I know.”

“Then why did it humiliate you?”

“Because she made sure I knew.”

That was partly true.

Margaret had.

Then Brandon looked at Elena.

“And you never really stopped her.”

Elena swallowed.

“That’s true.”

He seemed surprised.

She continued.

“I should have.”

Brandon’s face changed.

“But that doesn’t make the money yours.”

“I know.”

“It doesn’t make Mom’s loan disappear.”

“I know.”

“It doesn’t make hitting her self-defense.”

“I know.”

The repeated answer finally sounded like understanding rather than surrender.

Elena asked:

“What were you trying to protect?”

“Apex.”

“No.”

Brandon looked away.

Elena waited.

“Myself.”

“How?”

He rubbed his eyes.

“I kept thinking if the next project closed, I could replace every dollar before you knew.”

“And then?”

“You’d never have to find out I failed.”

There it was.

Not money.

Image.

He did not fear Elena seeing a transfer.

He feared her seeing that the business he used to define himself was no longer strong enough to survive without her money.

“What did you think I’d do?” Elena asked.

“Look at me like your mother does.”

The answer hurt.

“Did you think I’d leave?”

“No.”

That surprised her.

“What then?”

“I thought you’d stay.”

He looked directly at her.

“And I thought staying while you stopped respecting me would be worse.”

Elena felt tears rise.

For years Brandon feared contempt more than abandonment.

So he hid.

Controlled.

Reframed.

Then, when exposure arrived, attacked the person holding the evidence.

Understanding that did not repair anything.
