Chapter 1 - THE SECOND SLAP

The second slap was the one Elena saw.

She had come home early carrying white roses for her mother.

Margaret’s condo had flooded six weeks earlier, and she had been staying temporarily with Elena and Brandon in their suburban Chicago home while repairs were completed.

Elena expected to find her mother watching television.

Instead, she opened the front door and saw Brandon’s hand strike Margaret across the cheek.

The blue vase beside them tipped from the console.

It shattered across the marble.

Margaret staggered but remained standing.

“Brandon!”

He turned.

No guilt.

Only irritation at being interrupted.

“Thieves don’t get to live in my house.”

The flowers slipped from Elena’s fingers.

“What are you talking about?”

Margaret held one hand against her face.

“Ellie—”

Brandon grabbed her forearm and pointed toward the open door.

“She leaves tonight, or our marriage is over.”

Elena crossed the foyer and pulled his hand off her mother.

One clean movement.

No screaming.

No hitting him back.

Brandon stepped closer.

He knew that look on Elena.

The one she wore when she was furious enough to become quiet.

He mistook it for surrender.

“Choose carefully,” he said. “You’ll lose everything.”

Elena looked at him for five seconds.

Then she removed her house keys.

Placed them on the console beside Brandon’s phone.

Took Margaret’s hand.

And walked out.

After seven years of marriage, Elena thought that was the end.

She was wrong.

They were halfway down the driveway when Brandon’s phone started vibrating repeatedly behind them.

He rushed toward the console.

Elena saw his face through the open doorway.

Panic.

Not anger.

Something about those notifications frightened him.

She stopped.

Brandon saw her looking and grabbed the phone.

“What are you afraid I’ll see?” Elena asked.

His expression hardened.

“Nothing.”

That answer stayed with her.

Two hours later, Elena sat beside Margaret in an urgent-care exam room while a nurse documented swelling along her mother’s cheek and bruising around her forearm.

Elena finally asked:

“What did he think you stole?”

Margaret looked down.

“I don’t think he believed I stole anything.”

“Then why did he say it?”

Margaret took a long breath.

“Because I found something in his office.”

Elena felt cold.

“What?”

“Bank statements.”

“What bank statements?”

May you like

“Yours.”

Margaret looked at her daughter.
