Chapter 2 - THE SENTENCE LILY BORROWED

Melissa immediately tried to take the words back.

“She was scared. I gave her something simple to tell the dispatcher.”

“You told her I poisoned her,” Ryan said.

“I told her where the food came from.”

Grant asked Melissa to sit down. He did not arrest her. He separated her from Ryan and requested that a detective review the call before anyone made further accusations.

Melissa and Ryan had divorced eighteen months earlier. Lily lived primarily with Melissa in a two-bedroom apartment in Norwood because her elementary school was nearby. Ryan had her every Tuesday, Thursday, and alternate weekend.

The arrangement had never been peaceful.

Ryan managed the stockroom at a neighborhood grocery store. Melissa processed insurance claims for a dental network until her hours were reduced that spring. When she fell behind on groceries, Ryan began leaving bags at her apartment twice a week.

He did not reduce child support.

He did not tell his coworkers why he sometimes skipped lunch.

Melissa claimed Lily’s stomachaches often began after eating food Ryan supplied. Ryan insisted Lily had complained on school mornings, at soccer practice, and during weekends when she had eaten nothing from his store.

Neither parent had taken control of the medical problem.

Ryan had pushed for a specialist.

Melissa said the pediatrician believed the pain was anxiety from the divorce.

Ryan had accepted that explanation for too long.

Grant asked Melissa why she coached Lily instead of telling dispatch the child was in pain.

“Because Ryan had just delivered the groceries,” she said. “It made sense.”

“The surgeon says it didn’t.”

“I didn’t know that then.”

“But you knew you were putting his name into an emergency call.”

Melissa looked toward the surgery doors.

“He’s been trying to prove I’m an unfit mother for months.”

Ryan’s face changed.

It was a small reaction, but Grant saw it.

“So there is a custody dispute?” he asked.

Ryan rubbed the marks on his wrists.

“I spoke to an attorney. I haven’t filed anything.”

Melissa gave a humorless laugh.

“He had a petition drafted.”

Grant asked why.

Before Ryan could answer, a hospital social worker approached carrying Lily’s intake paperwork.

She had found something inconsistent in the medical history.

Melissa reported that Lily’s pain began after Ryan delivered dinner at six fifteen.

The school nurse had documented severe abdominal pain at eleven forty that morning.
