Chapter 10 - THE FORTY-SEVEN MISSING MINUTES
The full timeline forced every earlier clue into a different shape.
Melissa left Lily alone at 4:42 p.m. to clean a small insurance office across town. She expected to be gone fifty minutes. She needed the cash for rent and feared that another absence from her regular job would eliminate the few hours she had left.
Ryan delivered groceries at 4:55. He knocked, received no answer, and left the bags inside the secured vestibule because Melissa had previously given him the building code.
Lily’s pain worsened around 5:30.
At 5:48, she called Ryan through the parenting application. The connection failed.
Ryan immediately messaged Melissa.
Melissa read the message while riding home but replied that Lily was fine. She later admitted she did so because she did not want Ryan arriving before she did and discovering Lily had been left alone.
She reached the apartment at 6:02.
Lily was on the bathroom floor.
Instead of calling 911 immediately, Melissa searched the tablet, deleted the visible call to Ryan, moved the grocery bag from the vestibule into the kitchen, and asked Lily what she had eaten.
Lily said nothing.
Melissa opened a container from Ryan’s bag and placed it on the counter.
At 6:21, Lily dialed 911 herself while Melissa searched for her insurance card.
Melissa heard the dispatcher asking what had happened.
She saw Ryan’s groceries.
She remembered the draft custody petition.
And she whispered, “Tell them the food came from Dad.”
The delay was forty-seven minutes from Lily’s call to Ryan until the 911 call.
Nora had said another hour might have killed her.
The poisoning accusation had not merely humiliated Ryan.
It consumed time during a medical emergency.
Melissa’s financial fear explained why she left. Ryan’s secret petition explained why she panicked. Neither explained why she chose to manufacture blame while Lily’s intestine lost blood supply.
The major twist was not that Melissa wanted revenge.
She believed she was protecting her right to remain Lily’s mother.
Every decision she made to protect that role had endangered the child who gave the role meaning.
The guardian asked Melissa to confirm the timeline.
Her attorney advised her that lying further could damage both the custody case and any investigation into the false report.
Melissa looked at the deleted-call record, the bus schedule, and Ryan’s message.
Then she asked the question she had avoided since the hospital.
“If I admit it, does Ryan get to keep her?”
