Chapter 1 - THE CAGE DOOR SLAMMED SHUT

Daniel shoved Emily through the wire opening before she could protect her balance.
Her shoulder struck the metal frame. One hand caught the concrete; the other covered the hard curve of her eight-month belly.
“Get inside, you filthy burden,” he said. “Maybe the rats will teach you and that baby obedience.”
The wire door slammed. Daniel snapped the padlock closed and planted his boot against the frame as if Emily, bruised and barely able to stand, might tear through it.
Then the outer garage door rose.
Morning light spilled across the concrete.
Sarah stood beneath it with a prenatal-care refusal form in one hand. Michael was beside her with heavy bolt cutters. Megan and David crowded behind them, their expressions changing when they saw Emily curled beside a stained blanket.
The rats fled toward the back wall.
Sarah had spent nine days listening to Daniel claim Emily had gone to stay with relatives. She had spent three nights recording the scrape of chain against concrete through her kitchen window. The previous afternoon, she had photographed the wire pen through a gap in the garage blinds.
Now there was no fence between suspicion and proof.
Daniel’s face recovered quickly.
“This is private,” he said.
Sarah raised the paper.
“You forged this and caged your pregnant wife?”
His eyes moved toward the form’s title.
Michael stepped forward and set the cutters around the padlock.
“She stays in there until she learns obedience,” Daniel said.
David lifted his phone, recording openly.
Emily looked at Sarah. Her lips were cracked. Closed bites marked her forearms and one ankle, but her voice came clearly.
“Under the blanket. He hid something there.”
Sarah crouched beside the cage and pulled back the stained fabric.
A black phone rested beneath it, camera facing upward. A red recording timer was moving across the screen.
Daniel lunged.
Michael blocked him with one arm while snapping the cutters closed with the other. The padlock broke and struck the floor.
“Who else heard that?” Daniel demanded.
Emily stared at the phone.
Sarah picked it up by the edges. The recording application was still running, but the screen showed something more troubling than a saved video.
A small cloud icon pulsed beside the timer.
The footage was being uploaded somewhere.
Megan called 911 while Michael helped Emily crawl through the opening. Sarah wrapped her in a clean moving blanket from David’s truck.
Daniel stopped fighting as soon as he heard sirens.
He stood beside the broken cage, breathing hard, and looked less afraid of the police than of the phone in Sarah’s hand.
When the first deputy entered, Sarah surrendered the device and the forged form.
Emily gripped the deputy’s sleeve.
“Don’t let him delete the other videos,” she whispered.
“What other videos?”
May you like
Emily looked at Daniel.
“He’s been making them for weeks.”
