Chapter 7 - The Message He Deleted

Trevor had deleted the text thread with his mother from the week the twins died.

He told detectives he regularly cleared old messages.

That explanation might have survived if his phone had been the only device involved.

It was not.

An old family tablet upstairs was still connected to his cloud account.

The messages remained there.

Investigators preserved the device before anyone could alter it.

The thread began eighteen days before the deaths.

TREVOR:

Mom, Claire says they were way too sleepy again. Do not give them anything besides formula.

MARGARET:

She needs to stop inventing problems.

TREVOR:

I’m serious.

MARGARET:

I raised you and you survived.

Trevor had known enough to issue a warning.

He never told me.

Three nights later:

MARGARET:

Both boys asleep. See? Peaceful house when someone competent handles them.

TREVOR:

Just don’t use that sleep stuff.

MARGARET:

Stop being dramatic like your wife.

There it was.

Not proof Trevor knew every time she administered something.

Proof he knew there was “sleep stuff.”

I read the messages in my attorney’s office because Detective Benton warned me not to confront him privately.

My divorce attorney, Nicole Harris, sat beside me.

“You need to decide where you and Emma stay while this investigation continues.”

“I can’t live with him.”

The sentence came easily.

That surprised me.

Trevor had not been physically violent with me before the funeral.

He had restrained me there because he said he was trying to stop a fight.

But he had withheld information about a risk to our children.

Then he watched his mother build a case against me after they died.

That changed safety.

Not only physical safety.

Reality safety.

I took Emma to my sister’s house in Kettering.

I filed for temporary custody orders.

Trevor accused me of punishing him before charges existed.

I answered through counsel.

This isn’t punishment. I cannot trust you to tell me when our child is at risk.

That was the irreversible decision.

Our marriage did not end because toxicology found something in the twins.

May you like

It ended because Trevor had already known enough to ask his mother to stop.

And when she didn’t, he chose silence.
