Chapter 12 - What Margaret Said She Was Trying to Save

Margaret’s attorney eventually requested a meeting with prosecutors to discuss potential resolution.
I did not attend negotiations.
I was allowed to provide a victim-impact statement later.
Before that happened, Margaret asked through counsel whether she could send me a letter.
Nicole recommended I decide based on what I could emotionally tolerate, not on whether reading it proved strength.
I accepted it.
The letter began:
I loved those boys more than you will ever understand.
I nearly stopped reading.
Then:
You were exhausted. Trevor was becoming useless at work. Emma was acting out. Nobody was sleeping. I knew what had worked in my generation.
Margaret still described herself as solving a problem.
She admitted using a sedating medication on prior nights.
She claimed she never intended to injure the twins and had no idea the final bottles could be fatal.
She blamed modern doctors for “terrifying mothers about everything.”
Then came the line that explained the funeral.
When they died, I knew you would blame me if anyone found out. I was angry that after everything I did for your family, you would turn me into a monster.
She had attacked me beside the coffins because blame was arriving faster than grief.
Her cruelty had been defensive.
That did not make it smaller.
The medical examiner finalized the reports after extensive review.
Both deaths were attributed to toxic effects of an improperly administered sedating medication, with the circumstances classified as homicide in the medical sense—death caused by another person’s action.
That classification did not decide criminal guilt.
Prosecutors still had to prove a case.
But the central medical uncertainty was over.
Owen and Eli had not died because I failed as a mother.
They had not simply “stopped breathing in their sleep.”
Something had been put into both bottles.
Something they should never have received.
I sat in my car outside Nicole’s office and cried until my throat hurt.

Not from relief.
There is no relief inside proof that your babies could have lived.
