Chapter 8 - The Report Number

The police officer who took my statement did not promise immediate charges.

Financial cases moved through documents, interviews, subpoenas, and reviews. A power of attorney complicated everything because David had some lawful authority, even if he exceeded it.

The officer separated the suspected acts.

The forged bank signature.

The unauthorized bond sales.

The diversion of mail.

The attempted home-equity loan.

The use of my identity and security answers.

The transfers benefiting David, Emily, and the Ashfords.

I received a report number and instructions not to confront anyone privately.

Adult Protective Services opened a separate inquiry. A social worker came to my house, reviewed my medications, checked whether I had food and utilities, and asked whether anyone pressured me to change my will.

I resented the inspection.

I cooperated anyway.

The bank restricted all disputed accounts. The brokerage suspended David’s authority. The lender canceled the home-equity application.

Then the consequences reached David.

He worked as finance director for a regional construction company. His employer placed him on administrative leave after learning he was the subject of a financial-exploitation investigation involving falsified documents.

Emily blamed me.

She left a voicemail saying I had destroyed Michael’s stability because my “hurt feelings” mattered more than his father’s career.

I saved it.

The Ashfords’ attorney sent a letter claiming every payment had been an authorized family loan. According to them, I had promised to invest in the Shockoe Bottom venue and later changed my mind.

No agreement bore my signature.

But they had emails from David referring to “Dad’s commitment.”

One message said:

He wants the family protected before he declines further.

The lie about my capacity had been circulating for months before I discovered the account.

My sister called again.

This time she apologized.

Emily had sent her a copy of my cognitive evaluation—an incomplete draft obtained through David’s access to my medical portal. The page showing normal results had been omitted.

My sister agreed to provide the email to investigators.

A loyalty shifted.

Not enough to repair the family.

Enough to prove Emily was still manufacturing evidence after the accounts were frozen.
