Chapter 6 - The House Michael Thought They Owned

The appraiser worked for a lender reviewing a home-equity line of credit.

Someone had applied to borrow $275,000 against my Bon Air house.

The application listed David as my agent and gave his home as my mailing address.

It had not closed yet.

My revocation stopped it.

For the first time, I understood why Emily became vicious at the restaurant instead of merely dismissive.

The money they had already taken was running out.

My house was supposed to replace it.

David and Emily responded by calling relatives.

My sister phoned from Raleigh and asked whether I had stopped taking medication. An old neighbor sent me the number of a memory-care consultant. Emily’s mother told a mutual friend that grief had made me paranoid.

They were not defending a transaction.

They were rehearsing incapacity.

Michael called from his bedroom one night using a tablet.

His face appeared close to the screen.

“Grandpa, are you sick in your brain?”

“No.”

“Mom says you forgot you gave us everything.”

“I remember what I gave.”

He lowered his voice.

“Are you taking the house back?”

“It was never given away.”

Michael looked toward his closed door.

“Mom said we’re moving there when your paperwork is finished.”

The words landed harder than the lobster insult.

They had discussed my home in front of him as if I had already disappeared.

“Did she say when?”

“After they sell Grandma and Grandpa Ashford’s house.”

Emily’s parents lived in a six-bedroom Georgian house off River Road. They hosted charity dinners, drove leased cars, and spoke about wealth as if it were an inherited character trait.

I had assumed they were helping David and Emily.

The bank records suggested the opposite.

“Michael,” I said, “none of this is your fault.”

His mouth tightened. “Mom says if I talk to you, Dad might lose his job.”

A voice sounded outside his door.

Michael disconnected.

The next morning, Patricia sent a formal demand that David preserve financial records and stop making statements about my mental capacity.

Emily responded by cutting off my contact with Michael.

My grandson had become another account they believed they controlled.
