Chapter 14 - THE DINNER CAME BACK DOWN

Serena lunged from her knees and grabbed for Arthur’s file.

Elena yanked it back.

Serena slipped against the stone and dropped onto one hand.

Voices came from the lawn.

A dozen guests from Elena’s small pre-fireworks gathering had turned toward them.

Julian was among them.

He held copies of Arthur’s deed and trust amendment Miriam had given him earlier that evening.

Serena looked around.

Humiliation hit her.

The same terror she had once exploited in Elena.

“Give me the file.”

“No.”

“You’re just a bitter old widow.”

Serena looked toward Julian.

“Take it from her!”

Julian did not move.

Elena saw the pot on the table.

Saw the ruined leftovers.

Remembered the dog bowl.

The hired help eats last.

She picked up the pot.

“Elena,” Julian said.

She tipped it.

Food slid over Serena’s blonde hair and white satin dress.

Guests gasped.

Several phones rose.

Elena heard herself say:

“You told the owner of this land to eat with the dog. Now wear the dinner you gave her.”

The satisfaction lasted less than a second.

Then Elena knew she had made a mistake.

Not because Serena was innocent.

Because Elena had just allowed Serena’s cruelty to choose Elena’s behavior.

Serena stared up at her, stunned.

Then rage returned.

“You’re insane.”

She lunged for the file again.

Elena pulled it away.

Julian finally stepped between them.

“Stop.”

Serena caught his sleeve.

“Take the papers.”

Julian looked down at the deed.

He had read it before.

Tonight Miriam had added the trustee’s formal notice summarizing the possible consequences.

Serena tried to stop him from unfolding the second page.

Elena knocked her grabbing hand away.

She took the deed from Julian and held it where the nearest guests could see the title page.

“Arthur left every acre to me.”

That was not technically how the conveyance had happened.

Arthur and Elena had structured ownership while he was alive.

But the practical point was true.

“Your party, your plans and your future on this land exist only if I permit them.”

Serena struggled to stand.

Julian unfolded the trustee’s notice.

His face went pale.

“Mom.”

“Read it.”

“This says if they find we coerced you, distributions can be suspended immediately pending final review.”

Serena grabbed his wrist.

“Julian.”

He kept reading.

“And if the violation is confirmed, my control interest can be redirected into protected trusts for the kids.”

Serena’s panic became visible.

“Don’t.”

Julian looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because everyone is filming.”

Elena almost laughed at the symmetry.

Julian turned the page toward himself again.

“This doesn’t say we lose everything tonight.”

Serena whispered furiously, “They don’t know that.”

Julian stared at her.

Elena heard it too.

Even now, Serena’s instinct was to manage the appearance rather than the truth.

One of the guests lowered her phone.

Another did not.

Serena lunged with both hands for the notice.

Julian pulled it back.

A third page slipped loose.

Serena saw the heading.

Her face collapsed.

“No.”

Elena looked at it.

She had not seen this page either.

Miriam had attached the trustee’s preliminary findings.

Julian began reading.

Serena grabbed his wrist.

“Please.”

Elena went completely still.

Serena had never said please to her.

Julian looked at his wife.

“What are you afraid is in here?”

Serena said nothing.

Julian turned the page.

The first line referred to the attempted authorization from Arthur’s final year.

The next referred to additional correspondence provided by Serena herself during the trustee interview.

Elena stared at her.

“You gave them something?”

Serena lunged for the paper.

Julian pulled it away.

Fireworks exploded over the lake.

Everyone on the terrace turned toward the three of them.

Julian read the beginning of the next sentence.

Then stopped.

“Serena…”

His voice changed.

She closed her eyes.

Whatever she had told the trustee was worse than anything Elena had yet discovered.
