Chapter 11 - SERENA LEARNED JULIAN HAD LIED TOO

Julian told Serena the truth that evening.
She reacted exactly as Elena expected.
“Your mother planned this.”
Julian shook his head.
“Dad did.”
“Same team.”
“Serena.”
“How much?”
Julian told her.
Serena sat down.
“That was supposed to go to us.”
Julian closed his eyes.
“No.”
Serena stared.
“What?”
“That is the entire problem.”
“Don’t start sounding like your mother.”
“It was supposed to become mine if the conditions were met.”
“Which means ours.”
“Eventually.”
Serena stood.
“We built our plans around that.”
Julian stared.
“You did.”
“We did.”
“I never told you to count the trust in our current net worth.”
Serena laughed.
“You absolutely did.”
She went upstairs and returned with a printed personal financial statement Julian had given their mortgage lender eighteen months earlier.
Under contingent interests:
Hale Family Trust — estimated future beneficial interest.
Julian stared at his own signature.
Serena’s eyes filled.
“Don’t rewrite yourself into Mom’s innocent little boy now.”
The sentence landed.
Julian had not forged documents.
He had not presented Elena with the authorization.
But he had spent years treating Arthur’s future gift as a predictable part of his financial life.
Serena learned from him too.
Julian sat down.
“You’re right.”
Serena had prepared for a fight.
His agreement disoriented her.
“What?”
“I’m not innocent.”
Serena looked away.
“Neither am I.”
“No.”
Her expression hardened again.
“You didn’t have to agree that quickly.”
“Would lying help?”
Serena’s eyes filled.
“I was trying to save you.”
Julian looked at her.
“By putting fake paperwork in front of my dying mother?”
“Your father wasn’t dying then.”
“He was.”
Serena flinched.
“I mean your mom.”
They both stopped.
Julian’s voice became very quiet.
“You really did start seeing her as the thing between us and the land.”
Serena crossed her arms.
“Because she is.”
Julian looked at his wife differently.
“No.”
“Don’t.”
“She is the owner.”
“Temporary owner.”
Julian stood.
“There is no such thing.”
Serena stared at him.
Something in their marriage shifted.
Serena had believed Julian ultimately shared her assumption.
The trustee review forced him to recognize it as the problem.
She suddenly looked frightened.
“Are you choosing her?”
Julian shook his head.
“I’m choosing reality.”
“Convenient.”
Serena grabbed her purse.
“Reality would be easier if your mother wasn’t sitting on seventy-three acres while your company is dying.”
Julian looked at her.
“My company is my responsibility.”
Serena stopped.
May you like
That sentence threatened their marriage more than Elena ever had.
Because if Julian stopped treating inherited wealth as the answer, Serena would have to confront how many of their plans depended on it.
