Chapter 6 - Nicole’s Phone Call Changed Who Looked Guilty
Nicole called from Oregon the next morning.
Marcus had finally told her what happened.
She was furious.
Not only at Helena.
At Marcus.
“You left her there?”
Marcus tried to explain.
Nicole cut him off.
“You left our daughter with someone you knew was hitting her.”
“She wasn’t doing what she did yesterday every day.”
“You actually think that sentence helps?”
Vittorio stayed out of the conversation until Nicole asked to speak with him directly.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
“Would Marcus tell you if he did?”
Vittorio looked at his son.
“Apparently not.”
Nicole exhaled.
Then she said something unexpected.
“I tried to tell Marcus Helena was scaring Elsie in August.”
Marcus stood.
“No, you didn’t.”
“Yes, I did.”
“You said Mom was turning Elsie against you.”
“Because she was.”
The conflict had happened after one of Nicole’s video calls with Elsie.
Elsie had refused to speak much.
Helena remained in the room.
Nicole heard Helena correcting her answers.
When Nicole asked Elsie whether she wanted to come visit Oregon, Elsie looked toward Helena before answering.
Later Nicole confronted Marcus.
He accused her of looking for reasons to attack his mother.
“That’s not the same as telling me she was hitting Elsie.”
“I didn’t know she was hitting her!”
Nicole’s voice broke.
“I knew my kid was afraid of her.”
Marcus stopped talking.
Nicole had seen the earliest change from hundreds of miles away.
Vittorio had lived down the hall.
Nicole continued.
“Then Helena started saying Elsie came back from my visits ‘out of control.’”
Vittorio remembered those complaints.
Helena blamed Nicole’s parenting.
Too much candy.
No bedtime structure.
No discipline.
Each complaint seemed ordinary at the time.
Now he heard another possibility.
Helena had been creating an explanation for why Elsie behaved differently around her.
Nicole then revealed something else.
She had already consulted a family-law attorney about requesting a more formal custody schedule because she wanted longer visits with Elsie.
Marcus knew.
Helena knew.
That introduced another motive.
If Nicole documented concerns about Elsie’s treatment in Pennsylvania, Marcus’s informal arrangement could become much more complicated.
Helena had not merely been protecting herself.
She may have been protecting Marcus’s custody position.
Marcus reacted immediately.
“I never asked her to do that.”
Nicole answered:
“You signed that paper.”
Silence.
Vittorio looked at Marcus.
So did Nicole on the phone.
The false statement was no longer just Helena’s document.
Marcus’s signature made him part of it.

He could lose the trust of Elsie’s mother entirely.
