Chapter 15 - The Bracelet Finally Belonged to Me

Months later, I invited everyone to a small lunch at our house in Atlanta.

No elaborate party.

No gift table.

No relatives pretending nothing was wrong.

Marianne came.

Arthur came.

Dad came.

Mom almost canceled twice.

Then she showed up.

Nobody called it a reunion.

That word expected too much from people still learning how to stand in the same room.

Marianne brought one thing.

The original hospital photograph of her holding me.

I put it in a frame.

Not in the center of the room.

Not hidden in a drawer.

Just on the bookshelf.

Arthur stared at it for a long moment.

Dad looked away.

Mom said nothing.

After lunch, I took out the old gold bracelet.

E.M.H.

Eleanor Mae Hart.

The first name I ever had.

I had no intention of changing my name.

I was Clara Bennett.

But I no longer needed to erase Eleanor Hart to remain Clara.

Gigi climbed into my lap.

“Pretty bracelet.”

“It’s from when Mommy was a baby.”

I placed it beside Marianne’s photograph.

Later, Mom stood at the front door.

“Could I come next Sunday?”

Months earlier, she would have assumed.

Now she asked.

I looked toward Marianne, sitting on the floor helping Gigi collect crayons.

Then back at Mom.

“I haven’t decided yet.”

Victoria nodded.

No guilt.

No argument.

No demand.

She stepped outside.

I closed the door gently behind her.

For the first time in my life, there were no hidden boxes, no secret letters, and no one else deciding which parts of my family I was allowed to love.

But as I watched my biological mother laugh with my daughter, one question remained.

May you like

Could Victoria learn to stay in my life now that she could no longer control what that life looked like?
