Chapter 13 - The Letter Arthur Finally Gave Me

I decided I would continue seeing Marianne.

Slowly.

With boundaries.

With therapy.

And without hiding it from anyone.

Marianne never asked me to call her Mom.

She never demanded holidays.

She never tried to replace Victoria.

That made trusting her easier.

Arthur eventually brought me the original letter she had mailed eighteen years earlier.

The paper had yellowed.

Marianne had written about my childhood from a distance.

She knew I loved drawing.

She knew I had broken my wrist at eleven.

She knew when I graduated high school.

Someone had been quietly telling her pieces of my life.

The letter ended with one line:

If she ever asks whether I loved her, please don’t let silence answer for me.

I read it three times.

Then I cried.

Not because I suddenly wished Marianne had raised me.

I loved parts of the childhood Victoria gave me.

I cried because the choice had never needed to be between two mothers.

My family had created that choice.

I photographed the letter and stored copies.

Nobody would ever again be able to rewrite this part of my life.
