CHAPTER 5

CHAPTER 5
Julian fought the truth the way powerful men always do.
First, he denied.
Then he threatened.
Then he looked for someone weaker to blame.
“That recording is illegal,” he snapped. “She manipulated it. She’s sick.”
Chloe curled into me like she was trying to disappear.
I held her tighter.
A woman stepped into the doorway then.
Hospital board chair, Evelyn Mercer.
Seventy years old. Silver hair. Navy suit. The kind of woman Julian smiled at during fundraisers because her signature controlled millions.
He saw her and straightened immediately.
“Evelyn,” he said, forcing calm. “This is a family misunderstanding.”
Evelyn looked at Chloe on the bed. Then at the bruises visible beneath the loose edge of her gown. Then at me.
I handed her my phone.
She listened for fifteen seconds.
That was enough.
Her face hardened.
“Dr. Thorne,” she said, “you are suspended from all duties effective immediately.”
His mouth opened.
She continued.
“Security has already locked your office. Your access cards are disabled. The board has been notified. So has legal.”
Julian stared at her like she had betrayed him.
“You can’t do that.”
Evelyn’s eyes were ice.
“I just did.”
The room outside the glass had filled with staff now. Nurses. Administrators. Assistants. People who had feared him for years and were finally watching fear change sides.
Julian looked at Chloe.
“You did this,” he hissed.
May you like
I stepped between his eyes and my daughter.
“No,” I said. “You did.”
