CHAPTER 4

CHAPTER 4
Two police officers entered the room before Julian could speak.
They did not come loudly.
That was what made it beautiful.
No chaos. No shouting. Just two officers stepping into his perfect white room while his staff watched through the glass.
Julian’s face twisted.
“What is this?”
One officer approached him.
“Dr. Thorne, we need you to step outside.”
Julian laughed once, sharp and ugly.
“You have no idea who you’re touching. I run this hospital.”
I kept both hands on Chloe’s face and did not turn around.
“Not anymore,” I said.
The words landed so quietly that everyone heard them.
Chloe began to shake harder.
The heartbeat continued on the monitor, steady through the silence.
“Mom…” she whispered through tears. “He said I wouldn’t survive the delivery.”
The nurse behind the glass covered her mouth.
Julian snapped toward the officers.
“She’s lying. She’s confused. She’s unstable.”
I finally turned.
My hand lifted my phone.
“Then explain every threat you made while my grandchild was listening.”
His face changed.
Not because he felt guilt.
Because he recognized danger.
I tapped the recording.
Julian’s own voice filled the room, low and vicious.
If you leave me, Chloe, no one will question what happens on that table. I own this place. Your mother can cry over your body after I take my son home.
Chloe sobbed once.
May you like
The officer’s grip tightened on Julian’s arm.
And every person watching through that glass understood exactly what kind of man had been signing their paychecks.
