Chapter 9 - WHEN THE COMPANY STOPPED MOVING

Hale Moving and Storage closed temporarily the following Monday.
The trucks remained behind the chain-link fence. Drivers arrived for work and found notices taped to the office door. Several came to Douglas’s house demanding answers.
He blamed me.
One employee posted my photograph online and called me a bitter daughter destroying her father’s legacy. Another contacted Diane privately and admitted Douglas had asked him to backdate fuel invoices.
The conflict spread through our family, the company, and the neighborhood.
My aunt told relatives I had always resented Aaron for being chosen to run the business. An old church friend called to ask whether my head injury had affected my judgment.
Meanwhile, investigators questioned my own role.
My login had approved two fraudulent transfers. I had helped prepare payroll reports containing false information. Although I had not known the figures were wrong, ignorance did not remove my name from the documents.
My hospital employer placed me on administrative leave while its compliance department reviewed whether I had disclosed the outside work properly.
Douglas had created a system in which everyone touched part of the lie.
Aaron had approved routine payments without review.
I had trusted invoices.
Diane had delayed the audit.
Carol had tried to manage the problem privately.
Each of us gave Douglas a piece of plausible deniability.
Leah finally agreed to meet me at a coffee shop.
She looked exhausted.
“Noah asked why his dad can’t come home,” she said.
“What did you tell him?”
“That Aaron hurt someone.”
She wrapped both hands around her cup.
“Did your father really create the messages?”
“The evidence points to him.”
“Aaron still chose to believe them.”
“Yes.”
Leah nodded.
“I needed you to say that.”
She was not asking me to protect Aaron. She needed to know I would not erase his responsibility simply because Douglas had manipulated him.
Before leaving, she gave me a printed phone bill.
Douglas had called Aaron six times during the hour before the attack.
The calls stopped at 2:56 a.m.
At 2:58, Douglas used the family desktop to log into Aaron’s business-banking profile.
At 3:01, he entered my bedroom.
At 3:08, Aaron broke through the door.
The sequence suggested preparation.
May you like
But investigators still did not know what Douglas had done inside Aaron’s banking profile at 2:58.
The answer would change who the financial scheme had been built to destroy.
